Rita Goldstein, 95, of Ocean Grove died peacefully on Feb. 22 surrounded by her family.
Goldstein grew up in Asbury Park and was a 1945 graduate of Asbury Park High School. Her father and mother owned the Bond Street in Asbury Park in the 1930s, 1940s into the early 1950s. She was an artist at Fort Monmouth in the 1950s where she met her future husband, Lester. They then co-owned the Corlies Package Liquor Store in Neptune for more than 30 years
She is survived by her daughter, Maxine Renner, West Long Branch, a son, Stan Goldstein, of Ocean Grove, two grandsons, Lewis Renner of West Long Branch and Brian Renner of Brick Township, and a niece, Sandra Harrison, of Delray Beach, Florida. She is predeceased by her husband, Lester, her oldest daughter, Berna, her son-in-law Fred Renner, and her older brother, Bernard, who was killed in World War II.
Rita was a member of many organizations and always involved in some sort of fundraiser. She enjoyed attending the Neptune Senior Center and was proud of the dozens of baskets she made there over the years. If you were her friend, she most likely gave you a basket. She also enjoyed playing Mahjong at the senior center and taking part in many of its activities.
She enjoyed traveling, especially her trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas hoping to find the next hot slot machine. She attended many concerts with her son Stan including Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Barry Manilow and she even went to a Bruce Springsteen concert. She also enjoyed a corned beef sandwich, especially one from Howard’s Deli in Edison. Plus she loved chocolates and never missed watching “Jeopardy!” or “Wheel of Fortune.”
A small graveside service was held on Feb. 23 at Montefiore Cemetery in Springfield Garden, Queens, New York. The family is in the planning stages of a memorial service.
Donations may be made in her name to the Neptune Senior Center, 1607 Corlies Ave, Neptune, NJ 07753. Or please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
