If you are reading this now, it’s because Alice M. Hnat took her last breath on Nov 25, 2024. Born and raised in South Amboy N.J to the late Frank and Sophie (Ruszala) Toth.
Alice was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School and St. Mary’s High School in South Amboy. She worked at several jobs before finding her place at Bristol-Myers Squibb. She started part time in Accounts Receivable, full time in Payroll, the Credit Department, and last stop in Customer Service. She retired from Squibb 31 years later.
After retiring, she volunteered at Riverview Hospital for the next 10 years. She was at the front desk taking calls and directing visitors to their destinations.
Alice loved to cook, bake and try new recipes. Summer was her favorite time because it was spent at the beach on sunny days. A week or more was spent at LBI for many years until she discovered Cape May. Cape May was the go-to place after that.
Alice was able to travel to Germany, Austria, Hawaii, Italy, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico with her traveling sisters-in-law, cousins and friends. She also loved to go to the theater, be it New York or local theaters. Spending time with her family was still the best time of all.
For 52 years, Thanksgiving dinner was hosted for the combined families, including parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws, some traveling from California, Colorado, Maryland, Delaware and New York. This was an annual event looked forward to by both families.
Alice belonged to the Colts Neck Senior Citizens Club, St. Gabriel’s Holy Rosary and Needles-Little Angels Knit and Crochet Group. All the items made at Needles-Little Angels such as hats, scarves, baby blankets, afghans, shawls, stuffed animals were donated to local hospitals, Nursing Homes, or families in need.
Alice is survived by her husband Joseph of 62 years, her three children Donna (Kevin) Berry, of Tinton Falls, Dianna Hnat of Colts Neck and Gregory Hnat of South Amboy. She is also survived by her sister Irene Krzyzkowski of South Amboy along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
My, how the years goes by.
