The Taiwan Photonics Society informed us of Chinlon’s passing last week. It was such a sad surprise. His smiles and laughter are still so vivid in my mind. I first met Chinlon back in the early 1980s, when I just started my academic career in Taiwan. Chinlon always gives good advice and friendly remarks when he came to visit the Institute of Electro-optical Engineering, National Chiao Tung University. In the next few decades. I frequently met him at conferences all over the world or during his frequent visits to Taiwan. Naturally, we became good friends. My wife Ru-Pin and I also treasured the friendship of Helen as well. Chinlon is a warm and friendly person, eager to help and listen. In a sense, he was also my mentor. Besides being one of the references, Chinlon critically reviewed my application materials for election to the ranks of IEEE Fellow. Chinlon also helped me getting connected with CUHK, where I enjoyed a fruitful sabbatical in 2008. Below is a 2004 photo we took with Chinlon at CUHK, when he was a Photonics Professor and Director of the Research Center for Photonics at CUHK. We are saddened to learn of his passing and wish to offer our most sincere condolence to Helen and the Lin family. Ci-Ling Pan, Professor Emeritus National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan

I have just been informed by Prof Hon Ki Tsang of Chinlon's passing away. Although I usually feel awkward writing condolences, it feels natural to write a few words in his memory. I would also like to share all my sympathy to Helen, who was so close as to accompany him in countless business trips, and to the rest of his family. I ought Chinlon one of the most joyful adventures of my life. In 2004, Chinlon invited me to join his new group at the Chinese University of Hong Kong to start an undefined project relating to crystal fibers. Chinlon was bold enough to offer me a double challenge: adapting to a very different environment and to a new application field. Chinlon was absolutely great at connecting people across countries and areas of expertise and making sure that innovative projects would result. Chinlon would help ironing out obstacles of all sorts, be it technical, financial, organizational... From his leadership resulted great friendships, because it was fun and productive to work with him. Every time we met after leaving CUHK, Chinlon had a spark for new projects. He had gathered a lot of insights and shared them generously. Adieu Chinlon !

I started attending the Optical Fiber Communication Conference in 1991 and met Chinlon several times at OFC conferences. He was really kind to me, and I thought perhaps it was because we shared an alma mater, National Taiwan University, although 16 years apart. Soon, I found out his kindness extended to all young researchers, constantly providing support and recommendations when needed. With his technical expertise and patience in addressing questions, he would be the best mentor we could have. After joining The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003 with a joint appointment between the Department of EE and IE, he helped nurture many Ph.D. students and even provided career development support afterward. His strong backing was instrumental in some of our former students receiving prestigious young scholar awards. Chinlon is also a role model to me in his dedication to his family, especially his unwavering love for Helen, which caused complaints from my wife about me. Both my students and my family will greatly miss Chinlon—our forever mentor. Lian-Kuan Chen 亮光 (The Chinese University of Hong Kong)

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Chinlon Lin. As his student at Nanyang Technological University, I am filled with gratitude for the invaluable guidance and support he provided throughout my academic journey. His wise counsel shaped my decisions and led me to join a research lab in the industry at the beginning of my career. Twelve years later, inspired by his example of transitioning from industry back to academia, I returned to academia, bringing diverse sector experiences to enrich the academic community. Attached is a photo we took in Hong Kong on 12 July 2009 during OECC, when I had joined an industry research lab. His influence will continue to resonate with me and many others who had the privilege of being guided by him. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. May his memory be a source of strength and inspiration for all who knew him. Gordon Ning LIU, Distinguished Professor, Soochow University

I cherish the time spent with Prof. Lin when he was visiting KTH in Stockholm during August-October 2011. Prof. Lin is knowledgeable not only about photonic science and industry but also in culture, philosophy, and general wellbeing of people. Conversations along our weekend trip to Mariefred and Uppsala were very enlightening. Thanks for all seasonal greetings received in later years! Rest in peace. 林先生千古! Just learned Dr. Lin left us, a huge loss for the Chinese Optics Community. Chinlon’s great help to many young generations will be remembered forever. Chinlon taught us technical details selflessly, helped many settle down in the US, helped many grow up to be the pillars of the optics society … I am lucky that I was hired to Tyco Submarine by Chinlon (he was the technical director of the forward-looking work group) and I was able to work with him from 1999 to 2000. During the interview, Chinlon tried to persuade me to join Tyco, and one point he made I will remember forever – undersea fiber optic communications are very challenging since there is a lot of physics involved, and this belief supported me for my entire professional career! After Chinlon left Tyco and started his own company, I visited him every year after OFC until the pandemic. I still have his emails blessing Chinese New Year in early 2024! Rest in peace Chinlon! The photo was taken in August, 2017 at Chinlon’s home.

Professor Lin was a remarkable individual whose profound wisdom, kindness, and dedication left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. As a distinguished figure in laser photonics and broadband optical fiber communications, his groundbreaking contributions to dispersion-shifted fibers (DSF) and dispersion-compensation fibers (DCF) have been instrumental in advancing high-capacity optical fiber communication networks globally. Xueping and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to know him, learn from him, and be guided by him in the past years. Beyond his extraordinary professional achievements, we will always remember his warmth and humor. One vivid memory that stands out is in 2009, when the Nobel Prize was announced. Professor Lin wittily remarked that it was too early for Obama but too late for Charles Kao—a reflection of his sharp intellect and sense of humor. Professor Lin and Helen together created an atmosphere where everyone around them felt valued and respected. We believe Professor Lin lived a life of immense purpose and fulfillment, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come. He is now in the care of God and at peace. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time.

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Chinlon Lin. I had the privilege of meeting him when I first joined IBM Research at the Thomas J. Watson Center, working in the optical networking group under Paul Green. Chinlon, along with TP Lee, was instrumental in organizing side meetings during the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) conference, creating a welcoming space for all Chinese Americans involved in optical communication. His efforts helped foster a strong community within our field. When I decided to leave my position at CUHK to pursue entrepreneurial activities, I nominated Chinlon to take over my role. His expertise and leadership were well-recognized, and I knew he would excel in that capacity. We maintained contact over the years until his retirement and subsequent move back to the United States. Chinlon's contributions to optical communications and his dedication to mentoring others will be greatly missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.
