Donald R. Keddy, 83 of Monmouth Beach, passed away January 15th at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Mr. Keddy was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and was raised in Kentville, Nova Scotia where he met the love of his life. He later lived in East Orange, before moving to Monmouth Beach in 1955. He served in the United States Army in Europe during the Korean War. He received the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp and the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Keddy served in the United States Merchant Marine for 44 years, the last 25 as Chief Engineer. He sailed in and around Vietnam from 1956 to 1975. During the Vietnam War he received the Vietnam Service Bar and Medal from the United States Maritime Administration. He received the New Jersey Vietnam Service Medal and New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal. He was Past Master of Abacus Masonic Lodge No. 182, Long Branch which is now the Navesink Lodge No. 9, Red Bank. 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Trenton. He was a member of the Knights of Mecca Shrine Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 1000 and the Royal Canadian Legion, Post No. 6, Kentville Nova Scotia, Canada. Mr. Keddy's wife children and grandchildren were the pride of his life. He would start each day by getting his coffee and newspaper and go sit by the sea in North Long Branch. He was a diehard Yankee fan. During the offseason he enjoyed watching football. Mr. Keddy was an avid reader and enjoyed many books about politics. Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Theda Pearl Keddy; a son and daughter-in-law, Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin and Lisa Keddy, Ocean Twp.; daughter, Valerie Schiafone, Long Branch; and three grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Schiafone and Nicholas Keddy. Memorial gathering will be Friday, Jan. 21st, 7-9 PM at the Woolley Funeral Home, 10 Morrell St. Long Branch. Memorial Requiem mass will be Sat. Jan. 22nd 11:00 AM at St. James Episcopal Church, Long Branch.
