Ellen Calhoun Swaim left a message on September 12, 2015:
Eileen O'Connell was the mother of 8 kids, and I was friends with her youngest. We ran through her house in sheer freedom and happiness, creating chaos for Eileen, with the family leaving piles of laundry everywhere and with their Mom's frustration with the work of 8 kids only showing about once a year. I was five when I went to her house for the first time. She offered me cookies. I was too shy to accept, and said 'no thank you,' even though I wanted them. Eileen heard me turn them down, but she knew kids, and she set the plate of cookies in front of me anyway. I have never forgotten that, although it happened 53 years ago. I felt welcome in the O'Connell house ever after that. When I visited Eileen a few years ago, we sat at the same table and laughed at remembered stories. Dennis shared a story from his fifth grade year of mischief, about how a little girl hit him, so he hit her back, and how unfair it was that he was the one who got into trouble. Eileen said 'oh Dennis, you bring it on yourself,' as if we were all back in third or fifth grade, as if no time had passed. It was sheer loveliness. When I pass through to the other side, I will be looking for Eileen's house. xoxoxoxo Eileen, with love and thanks.
