James E. Slattery of Oceanport passed away at Riverview Medical Center on Friday April 2nd. He was 80 years old.
Jim was a graduate of the Valley Forge Military Academy and served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his service, Jim worked for New Jersey American Water Company, before becoming the owner and operator of Slattery’s Pest Control, Oceanport. He retired in 2019 after working for 46 years. He was active in the Borough of Oceanport, serving in the Port Au Peck Volunteer Fire Company and rising to become the Fire Chief in 1985. He also served as Oceanport’s Emergency Management Coordinator from 1986-2002 and was a member of the Planning Board for many years.
He was a caring person who was dedicated to his family, business and community. Jim was a fan of the History Channel as well as being an avid student of the Civil War. Jim enjoyed traveling with his family, and a good dinner and a nice glass of wine at the Sitting Duck in Long Branch or Zachary’s in West Long Branch.
Jim was pre-deceased by his wife Joan Brummer Slattery in 2008 and their son James Slattery in 1987.
Surviving Jim are his son and daughter-in-law, Kerin and Felicia Slattery, Oceanport; daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Richard Ferrante, West Long Branch; his sister and brother-in-law, Maureen and John Clooney and sister Pat Burrows, Lady Lakes, Florida; three grandchildren, James Slattery, Samantha Slattery and Steven Ferrante; his partner Jackie Weinstein, West Long Branch, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation Friday, April 9th, 4 to 8 pm at the Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. Funeral procession to leave funeral home Saturday April. 10th, 9:30 am, arriving in Oceanport for Ex-Chief honors, then proceeding to Woodbine Cemetery for interment.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s memory to the Port-Au-Peck Fire Company, 433 Myrtle Avenue, Oceanport, NJ 07757.
