James (Jim) W. Thal, 80, of Lincroft, New Jersey, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Arbor Terrace of Middletown.

Born in East Orange, NJ, Jim was the son of the late Walter and Louise (née Koenig) Thal. After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and the Merchant Marines. Following his military service, Jim embarked on a lifelong career in manufacturing, beginning as an apprentice toolmaker in 1963. Through dedication, skill, and perseverance, he advanced to a Class A toolmaker, then Leadman, before ultimately founding his own business, Thal Precision Industries, which he operated until his retirement.

Jim was highly respected in the tool and die industry. He worked side by side with his son for more than 30 years, keeping the family business thriving, while his wife Diane managed the company’s books. This close-knit family partnership allowed James to share not only a career but daily life with family.

Never one to sit still, Jim lived life to the fullest. In his younger years, he had a passion for cars and motorcycles, owning several classic muscle cars—including his favorite, a 1966 Corvette—and a BSA motorcycle. He and his coworkers helped build a pro-stock drag car that raced at Englishtown, New Jersey.

An avid and accomplished skier, Jim traveled extensively to pursue his love of the sport, skiing throughout Europe, Iceland, the western United States, and enjoying cross-country skiing trips in Vermont. He also cherished time spent at the Jersey Shore, particularly summers with his Holly Park friends, where days were filled with fishing, swimming, water skiing, and sailboat racing.

Jim’s love for the water endured throughout his life. He owned several boats, earned his captain’s license, and fondly shared overnight offshore tuna fishing trips with family, venturing more than 50 miles off the New Jersey coast. His passion for fishing took him to Costa Rica, Bermuda, Aruba, and Hatteras, North Carolina, where he proudly caught a citation-sized mahi-mahi. He was also an accomplished scuba diver, exploring shipwrecks off the New Jersey coast and in Bermuda, and lobster diving straight from the ocean floor.

In his later years, Jim found great joy in golf, spending countless hours refining his swing and pursuing the elusive perfect round. He was a member of Bamm Hollow Country Club for many years, and then Glenwood. Jim was fortunate to have had the opportunity to play many different courses across the US.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Thal, and his uncle, Eric Koenig.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Thal; his children, Paul, Keith, and Laura, and their significant others; and his cherished grandchildren, Kelly, Kristina, Ryan, Trevor, Sarah, Bennett, and Liam.

As per his wishes, Jim will be cremated and a Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at the Jersey shore in the Spring.  Family and friends will be notified once plans have been finalized.
