John resided in Hoboken, East Orange, East Hanover and Middletown throughout his life. He played trumpet and piano, and had a great passion for music. He was a member of the Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps for years.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who lived for his family. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Josephine in 2011. He is survived by his son Leonard and his wife Susan of Oceanport, three daughters Rose Ann Gaudio and her husband Paul of Lincroft, Grace O’Deven and her husband Joseph of Auburn Hills, MI and Frances Altomare of Belmar, and 6 grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 17th from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ. A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered on Saturday, August 18th at St. Leo the Great R.C. Church, 50 Hurleys Lane, Lincroft, NJ at 10:00 A.M.

John’s family: I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through a similar situation and I was very helped by the hope that I found in the Bible in John 5:28, which says, "Do not amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". Anyone that was friends with the Altomare kids (Lenny, Ro, Grace and Frannie) growing up in Middletown was lucky enough to be welcomed into the house in Oakhill by Mr. and Mrs. Altomare. I consider myself so lucky to have been a part of their extended family. Growing up was so much easier because you could always stop by, have a cup of coffee, smoke a few cigarettes at the kitchen table and have a chat. Mr. Altomare was a very loving and caring gentle giant. He will be missed deeply. Give Jo a hug from me! Until we meet at that kitchen table in the sky may you rest in peace.
