John V. Ellis

April 23, 1921 - December 1, 2011

John V. Ellis, 90 of Rumson, passed away Thursday December 1st at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank.

Mr. Ellis was born in Manhattan, NY and was raised there and Shrewsbury. He moved to Rumson in 1948. He was a communicant of Holy Cross RC Church, Rumson. In 1971 he retired as a Civil Servant at Ft. Monmouth. Then he worked many years at B&B Beverage in Long Branch. He then went to work for the New Jersey Highway Authority where he retired as a toll collector in 1999. He was a member of the Red Bank Elks B.P.O.E. # 233, the American Legion Post 055, Hackensack. He played baseball for the Red Bank Towners and in 1946 he had a try out with the New York Yankees.

Surviving is his wife Mary Folker Karlo Ellis; seven daughters and two sons-in-law, Karen Ellis, Long Branch, Joan Ellis, San Anselmo, Ca., Virginia and Frank Mazza, Shrewsbury, Elizabeth and John Lunney, Little Silver, Helen L. Graves, Ocean Twp., Mary A. Karlo, Rumson and Stephanie A. Karlo, Milford, Pa.; a son, Thomas S. Karlo, Jr. and his fiancÃ© Deirdre Ross, Atlantic Highlands; four grandchildren, Sarah and Margaret Mazza, Corey Lunney and Mars Graves.

Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 4th, 6 to 9 PM at the Woolley Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, Dec. 5th, 10 AM, Holy Cross RC Church, 30 Ward Avenue, Rumson. You may light a candle of condolence by visiting www.woolleyfh.com.

Growing up in Rumson I knew John for many years thru his daughters. I was driving for a limo service and got to see him wherever he was on the parkway. John you will be missed and we all love you. Stuart

John and I were neighbors on Lafayette St. many, many years ago. I also had the pleasure of working with him at Ft. Monmouth. It sounds like God blessed him with a long, full life. I can still hear that great laugh,Uncle John. You made everyone feel so special - those summer visits were awesome - I can still see you with your white belt and white shoes and I have some of your letters you wrote home to Mom during the war years - you made everyone around you happy. It always seemed that every holiday ansd special event became more joyous when Uncle John arrived. His laughter and his love of song always made me love his arrival. Love you Uncle John.

We had so many great times together and I know my dad greeted you up in heaven, I'm sure he saved you a nice fillet, half a pound of salt, and a nice cold coca cola.
