Kathleen “Kathy” J. Penwell, 83, of Toms River, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, surrounded by the love of family and the memories of a life well lived.

Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Kathy was the beloved daughter of the late Margaret and Charles Patrick. After graduating from West Side High School, she attended Western Michigan University, where she met her husband of 63 years, Dale S. Penwell. Following graduation, the couple began their life together in New Jersey, living in Toms River, Chatham, Florham Park, and Randolph while both pursued careers in education. They eventually settled in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where they raised their family and built a warm and welcoming home for more than four decades. Later, they returned to Toms River, where they remained together until Dale’s passing.

A devoted educator, Kathy spent many years teaching in the Chambersburg School District. Teaching was not simply her profession; it was her calling. She believed deeply in the power of kindness, integrity, and leading by example. Her classroom was a place where students felt encouraged, supported, and inspired, and the lessons she taught extended far beyond academics.

Those who knew Kathy will remember her for her grace, compassion, determination, and quick wit. She had a gift for making people smile with her thoughtful observations and subtle sense of humor. She approached life with strength and purpose, always striving to do what was right and encouraging others to do the same. Kathy was a source of wisdom and steady support for her family, friends, colleagues, and students.

Kathy found joy in creating beauty around her. She loved decorating her home, tending to her landscaping, exercising, and losing herself in a good book. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family. Holidays, family gatherings, and simple moments together brought her the greatest happiness. She took immense pride in her children and grandchildren, and in the countless students whose lives she touched throughout her career.

Kathy was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Dale S. Penwell; and her sister, M. Diane Kaiser.

She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughter, Amy Penwell and her husband, Jesse Yallof, of Moorestown, NJ; her daughter, Linda Penwell-Celkupa and her husband, Jordan Celkupa, of Colts Neck, NJ; her son, Michael Penwell, of Mars, PA; her brother, Charles Patrick, and his wife, Carol; her four beloved grandchildren, Jacob, Sky, Hunter, and Lena; as well as many treasured nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Kathy’s legacy lives on in the family she loved so deeply, the students she inspired, and the countless lives made brighter by her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering example. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 1 from 10 am – 12 pm at the Holmdel funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel. A funeral home service will be offered at 12 noon.
