Leonard 'Doc' Spiegel, 88 of West Long Branch passed away peacefully at home on September 22nd, surrounded by his loving family after having lost a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Doc Spiegel was born in New York City on September 12, 1924, and moved to Cedar Knolls, NJ as a young child. He served in the US Army Air Force during World War II. He was graduated from Drew University with a BA Degree in Botany in 1948. In 1950 he was graduated from Northwestern University with a MS Degree in Botany. In 1954 Doc received his PHD in Wildlife Management, from Cornell University, where he was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, an Honors Fraternity. After completing his PHD, he worked for 2 years in Ohio's Division as a Wildlife Management Supervisor. In 1955 he began his college teaching career at Alpena Community College in Alpena, Michigan. In 1957 he began teaching at Central Michigan University, in the Biology Department. In 1962 he returned to Cornell University as an Associate Professor as an Extension Conservationist in Fisheries and Wildlife Management. In 1963 Doc was hired as a full Professor in the Department of Biology at Monmouth College, where he taught for 26 years, serving 8 of those years as Chairman of the Biology Department. He retired as a Professor Emeritus at the end of the spring semester in 1989. For 25 years he was the Advisor of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity at Monmouth College. Doc was the founder of the Monmouth College Chapter of Beta Beta Beta a Biology Honors Society. Through his years of education Doc worked with many students on research in the field of Environmental Sciences. In 1976 Doc Spiegel was appointed by Governor Brendan T. Byrne to the New Jersey State Mosquito Commission, serving for 25 years. In addition he did private consulting in Environmental Science and he also worked with the Marine Consortium on their Sea Grant program at Sandy Hook until 1990. He was member of the National Wildlife Society, and the New Jersey Wildlife Society and the New Jersey Mosquito Control Association, serving as President from 1989-1990. Doc was a member of Takanassee Beach Club, West End for many years. Doc was pre-deceased by his mother, Rose Spiegel, his father, Leon Spiegel and his step-mother Celia Berry Spiegel, and in 2011 by his son-in-law, Michael Schaffner. Surviving is his loving wife JoAn Spiegel, with whom he would have celebrated their 62 anniversary in December of 2012; His son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Christie Spiegel and their daughters, Sarah Spiegel and her husband Josh Johnson and Rachael Spiegel; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Eileen Spiegel and their son, Christopher and their daughter, Jaime Spiegel; his daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Steve Anderson and her step-children and their families; Terra, Clif and Saige Weeks, and Jeff and Tiffany Anderson; his daughter Melanie Schaffner and her children, Kyle, Hannelore, Karli and Heidi Schaffner; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Spiegel and Frank Carmen and their daughter Keziah Spiegel. Memorial gathering will be Sunday, September 30th, 2 to 4 pm at the Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. A service in Celebration of Doc's life will begin at 4pm at the funeral home.
