Mary E. Tonkin, 91, of Holmdel passed away Friday, February 27, 2026 at Brightview of Holmdel. Born in Manhattan, NY; Mary lived in Staten Island most of her life before moving to Red Bank in 2016.
Mary retired after working at Standard & Poor’s in New York City for over 30 years. During her retirement, she enjoyed family vacations and cruises, especially her trips to Cape May during the summer. She enjoyed reading a good Hollywood biography and watching her favorite classic movies, especially those starring James Cagney. Mary loved spending time at restaurants with her family, ordering a Madras with “not too much ice,” and cooking her staple dish, spaghetti with meat sauce. Mary was very proud of her Irish heritage, with the highlight of her year being St. Patrick’s Day. All her friends and family could count on a phone call from Mary to catch up and make sure everyone was doing fine.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 2009. She is survived by her children, Richard (Eileen) Tonkin of Washington State and Mary (Kevin) Johansen of Holmdel; her five grandchildren, Michael (Jade), Eric (Brianna), Daniel, Tara (Brendan), Brian; her great-granddaughter, Amelia; her sister, Elizabeth Howe, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4pm to 8pm, Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ 07733. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30am, Saturday, March 7, 2026, at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, 4055 Victory Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10314. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island.
