Matthew F. Connors, 87 of Oakhurst, passed away surrounded by his family July 24th at the Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.
Mr. Connors was employed by the Ocean Township Sewerage Authority for many years, before retiring. Prior to that he was a milkman for Shore Dairies, of Allenhurst. He was a communicant of St. Michael’s RC Church, Long Branch.
Like many of the greatest generation, he served his country honorable during WWII. He was in the 508th Combat Military Police Battalion which was attached to General Pattons’ 3rd Army. From 1937 to 1940 he served in Panama in the 13th Infantry.
In 2006, Mr. Connors was awarded his high school diploma at a Veteran’s Day Ceremony in his hometown of Ayer, MA by the Ayer Board of Education to a standing ovation.
He is survived by the only girl he ever loved his wife of 64 years, Frances Gunther Connors; a son Michael J. of Eatontown; a daughter and son-in-law, Candy & Olaf Petzold, Oakhurst, a brother, Alex Connors, Niceville, FL; a sister, Patricia Merrick, Maryland; and his grandson Matthew J. Petzold, Oakhurst.
Visitation will be Sunday 2 to 4 pm & 7 to 9 pm at the Woolley Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street at Broadway, Long Branch. The funeral mass will be offered Monday at 10:30 am at St. Michael’s RC Church, Long Branch. Cremation will be private.
