Patricia M. Synefakis, 77, of Holmdel, passed away peacefully at home on August 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Bucharest, Romania, Patricia immigrated to the United States at the age of 18. Determined and ambitious, she pursued higher education at City College of New York, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, before earning two master’s degrees in Engineering and Electrical Communications from the Stevens Institute of Technology, an extraordinary accomplishment, especially for a woman of her time. She remained deeply proud of this achievement throughout her life. Mrs. Synefakis went on to have a distinguished career spanning over several decades at Bell Labs in Holmdel, retiring in 2001. During her time at Bell Labs, she participated in the launch of the Telstar 3 satellite.
Patricia was an active member of numerous organizations, including the Astronomy Society, the Young Engineers Club, and the Cosmology Club. She was also a parishioner of Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Holmdel. Beyond her professional and academic accomplishments, Patricia will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was passionate about dancing, playing piano, astronomy, and quantum physics. She had a love for family, cats, music, and philanthropy.
She was predeceased by her parents, Sotir Galanis and Mary Galanis (nee Pegulescu). Surviving is her beloved husband, George Synefakis; her daughter, Cornelia Synefakis-Pica; and her grandson, Gavin Pica.
Visitation Thursday, August 28, 11:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 pm at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 20 Hillcrest Road, Holmdel. Entombment to follow in Holmdel Mausoleum.
