Mary was a very interested member of the Red Bank Area League of Women Voters. Even in her later years she constantly clipped articles of interest to the League and sent them to me. She was a wonderful lady and will be missed.

Bob and Mary enlivened our family dinners at holidays for years and supported all of us working so hard on the environment with their wordsmithing, enthusiasm, creativity, and knowledge. I served on committees with both of them. Mary was a very dear friend and a truly beautiful person, with the strength to battle giants and injustice everywhere. She will always be greatly missed -- except a part of her is here in my heart forever. Louise Usechak

To Mary's family, I was saddened to hear of Mary's passing. She and my mother, now deceased, were friends. They shared a great love for gardening and were both involved in preserving the environment. Mary was a lovely, warm person who will be greatly missed. Please accept my deepest sympathies, Marina Mulvey Christopher, Daughter of Olga Mulvey Hoff

My first memories of my grandmother were of going to the beach with her and Granddad, going back to a freezer full of ice cream. Though I did not get to see her in the last several years, I felt I got much closer to her through our correspondence, and that is what I will miss most. Her enthusiasm for birds and the environment, her caring for the people around her, and her humor came through in her letters. Writing her made me more grateful for the people and adventures in my life, which seems to be something she brought out in just about everyone she knew.

Thank you all for your loving memories of my mother and your wishes for our family. My mother was a remarkable person: loving, passionate about her family and friends, enthusiastic and determined about preserving the environment, and a person of deep faith. She loved her home in West Long Branch on Wall Street and the fields surrrounding it. If she had the strength, I would take her for a drive by 266 Wall Street when I came down to NJ to visit her at the Navesink Harbor. She made friends easily, spoke to people spontaneously in lines at the supermarket, and learned to do so in several languages over the years. She had a great laugh and did it often. And she kept in touch with friends all over the world until her energy began to fade during the last several years. She was an incredible correspondent whether writing regularly to her family, to friends, or in support of the causes she believed in. I am going to miss her very much, hearing her voice, laughing with her and getting her cards and letters.

Mary was an indefatigable environmentalist and encouraged others to follow her lead. Among other things she was a persistent advocate for recycling. We all owe her a debt of gratitude for raising our awareness and encouraging us to live more lightly upon this earth.

My condolences to the Owen family. Mary will remain in my mind forever. We met when I joined Old 1st UM Church about 9 years ago. For a year or two before she moved to Red Bank I enjoyed Sunday Bible Study with her — the joke between us was Mary and Martha — sisters. She was frail even then, but with a spirit and kindness that was fierce. I work at The LINK Newspaper — over the years, Mary would often call or write a note of encouragement, saying how much she enjoyed reading the paper, articles about West Long Branch, and a column "The State We're In" from the NJ Conservation Foundation. She cared so deeply about the environment, people, and all the creatures, great and small. She was a blessing to know.

Mary is a wonderful child of God who shared His love and shined His light everywhere she went, and with everyone who would listen. While we grieve her passing, I know the angels have welcomed home a very dear friend. Old First UMC mourns her death and celebrates her eternal life. We will see you, Mary, at The River!

Mary will always have a special place in my heart. She was such a wonderful person. I especially appreciated her work on behalf of our earth. I also always enjoyed reading her 'letters to the editor'. She truly was a great example as a citizen and person.

For many years I was the secretary to Freeholder Ted Narozanick. I had the pleasure of speaking to Mrs. Owen many, many times as she would always call to let the Freeholder know her thoughts on all environmental issues and the acquisition of open space. She was a great advocate for the environment and a very lovely woman. Her recycling efforts in West Long Branch will long be remembered. My sincere sympathies.

My mother, Elizabeth Lacewell, and Mary Owen were the best of friends since childhood. I used to go to Mrs. Owens house and play in the barn in the back yard with her children. Mrs. Owen is dear sweet women and she will be deeply missed. My mother is grieving at the news of her loss. My mother is in a nursing home in Virginia and she and Mary Owen corresponded by mail and phone calls. My family will miss Mrs. Owen. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. Love, Donna
