Arnold J. Gelfman, 75 of Ocean, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 23 at Monmouth Medical Center.

Born in Northampton, MA, Arnie attained his undergraduate degree at University of Massachusetts, his master’s degree from Western Michigan University and began his doctorate at American University. Arnie has resided in Ocean for 43 years where he served on the Planning & Zoning Board and was president of the Kepwell Park Homeowners Association. He was president of the Jewish Federation, Monmouth County in 1990-1992, a board member of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Monmouth County, a former board member of both Congregation Brothers of Israel and Temple Beth El, now Congregation Torat El and B’nai B’rith, Ocean. Arnie is a member of both Congregation Brothers of Israel and Congregation Torat El.

In 2016, after 43 years, Arnie retired as Executive Director of Planning, Assessment & Research at Brookdale Community College. There is was the co-founder of Brookdale Community College Career Clinic and Testing Center. Arnie was also President and Owner of Career Choice Institute of NJ, a consulting firm, working with insurance companies and attorneys throughout NJ as a vocational expert.

Arnie will be remembered as a kind and giving person who was honored with many community and professional awards. He enjoyed sports, especially the NY Yankees. Family was most important to Arnie.

Arnie was predeceased by his parents Harold and Lena (August) Gelfman and his niece, Victoria Gelfman. Surviving is his wife of 43 years, Margo, his son Austin Gelfman, Sherman Oaks, CA, his brother & sister-in-law Richard & Lenore Gelfman, Columbia, MD; his nieces Hillary Gelfman, Chicago, IL & Dr. Joanna Gelfman, Ellicott City, MD and Leela.

Funeral service Friday, July 26th 1:00 PM at the Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. Burial to follow in Brothers of Israel Cemetery, West Long Branch. Donations may be made in memory of Arnie to Monmouth Medical Center Foundation, Department of Oncology, 300 Second Avenue, Long Branch, NJ 07740.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Arnie Gelfman. I remember him fondly as a colleague and friend of many years. Since I had been away this week, I only now learned of the sad news, and I regret that for that reason I have missed his services. I would like to extend to this family and all who knew him my most sincere condolences.

Arnie was a great colleague and friend, always willing to talk over innovative ideas about higher education and helpful to faculty with the extensive data he collected on the activities and performances at Brookdale. When my wife was a reporter with the Asbury Park Press, she did an article on Arnie. It was a slow news day and Arnie made front page. He was thrilled and he and Jody became life long friends. I was on many committees with Arnie including the Steering Committee of Governance and the committee that oversees grant proposals. He was always insightful, helpful and fair as a committee member. He is a loss to all of us.

Condolences to the family during this time. Arnie was always a kind, generous man who always had time for others. People may throw around the word mensch too much, but in Arnie's case it is absolutely appropriate. He will be missed.

Arnie was such a kind-hearted fellow. I'll always appreciate his willingness to listen, acknowledge your point of view, and build whatever consensus he could from even disparate observations. Sorry to learn of Arnie's passing. He always had a smile on his face and quick to laugh.

I came to Brookdale in 2006 and immediately found someone I could send email with links and articles and all sorts of material on assessment- just to create conversations and Arnie was always able and willing to reach out. I found Arnie to be a very special person- someone who was wise, kind, smart, humble, and genuine!! Arnie was easy to talk to- and I liked being around him. When Arnie left Brookdale I would always ask Laura about him- I would want to know how he was doing and was he alright. When I look back at my Brookdale days Arnie will always come to mind . He left an impression! My sympathies to the family. We were all blessed to have been in his life .

I traveled a lot of roads with Arnie at Brookdale and I'm proud to say he was one the most genuine and sincere person I have ever met. He worked hard, always fair - looking for that middle ground that benefitted everyone. With a huge pile of his own tribulations, he was always an ear for my own. Whether working side by side with him or enjoying his wonderful sense of humor, I was always so proud to have him for a friend.
