I first met Ed in 1954 immediately after graduating from NCE (now known as NJIT)... that was the day I joined SOD (Standard Oil Development Company). Ed and I sat in a room with two other folks and Ed supplied us all with second hand defective cigars. No matter- we enjoyed each other for 20-25 years. It was great.... we did business together, laughed together, and enjoyed many of the same interests. In 1984 I had the cermonial 30th anniversary lunch and I asked Ed to come up for it...and if you know anything about Ed at all you know he did not like to travel but he did come up and i was over joyed. The pictures of Ed and me are outstanding!!!! I really don't know how to end this other than to say....Ed was really one of the good guys!!!!

I met Ed during my first assignment to Florham Park,NJ in 1974. Everyone made me feel welcome but a few especially welcome. Ed was one of those people. Always helpful to the newcomer, always friendly and always a gentleman. He will be remembered and missed by many.

I had the privilege of working with Ed for twenty-six years during my career at Exxon-from day one until his retirement in 1980. He was a fine person, most charitable and a great friend. In addition to being a good engineer Ed was a great cook and baker. Thanksgiving day dinners and picnics at his home were always memorable occasions. To me Ed as a prime example of the"greatest generation" and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jack Turney

Ed had all the good traits that seem to be deminishing in today's world. He was a gentleman, industrious and a good and reliable friend. His presence on Earth will be sorely missed. Bob and Connie Orgonas

I first met Ed in 1969, when I joined as a new hire at (then) Esso Research and Engineering, Florham Park, NJ. Ed shared an office with Jack Turney, as two group leaders they ruled their roost of experienced and new hires. Ed would listen in as I explained a problem to Jack. Ed always had a sense of humor, especially since I was a new hire and from the 60's generation who wore different than traditional clothes to the office. Ed's humor always centered around working his grounds, and about farm animals. He liked the leather belt I wore to work one day -- it was made of rawhide, and he told me it would last forever like it did on the horses (it did, but my stomach expanded!). A real gentlemen whose expertise in refractories was known far and wide before such experts existed. He was always nice to me, offering advice or just good humor. Ed, may you rest in peace.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.
John Peterson left a message on April 27, 2012:
I worked with Ed at Exxon in Florham Park, NJ in the late 1970's. He was my mentor in the field on refractory lining materials and a friend. Generous to a fault, Ed was formative in my career and personel life. To his friends and family, let me say that his Exxon friends have expressed fond memories of Ed eventhough he retired over 30 years ago and we join you in grieving his passing.

When Ed retired from Exxon in 1980, I was hired to work with John Peterson in 1981. I had met Ed before he retired and was impressed with his personality in the work place. I was impressed by the testimony of how he lived his life in retirement. God has truly blessed all of us through the life of Ed Shumacher! May He grant peace and comfort to all of those who have been close to him in recent years, and to those who remember him so well from close relationships in the past.
