John J. “Jack” Delaney 77 of Holmdel died Sunday, October 23, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was employed for 44 years with Lucent Technologies, Holmdel before retiring in 1996 as Department Chief for their Computers Division. He was a graduate of Seton Hall Prep and Seton Hall University. He was a parishioner of St. Catharines R.C. Church, Holmdel, serving as both a member of the Parish Council and as a teacher of Religious Education. He was a basketball coach for the Holmdel Youth Athletic Association. He was also a member of the American Chesterton Society. He summered in Avalon for many years. Born and raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark, he lived in Bloomfield, before moving to Holmdel 47 years ago. He is predeceased by 2 sisters, Margaret Holden and Nancy Coleman. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Nancy Flynn Delaney, 2 daughters and their husbands, Eileen and Laurence Fell of Red Bank, Carolyn and Bill Juettner of Chapel Hill, NC, and a son and his wife, John F. and Mary Elizabeth Delaney of Oyster Bay, NY. Also surviving is a brother, James Delaney of Nokomis, FL., 6 cherished grandchildren, Delaney, Thomas, and Kerry Fell, Erin Delaney, Jack and Kate Juettner, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel. Funeral Liturgy will be offered on Friday at 9:00 am at St. Catharines Church, Holmdel with interment to follow at St. Gabriels Cemetery, Marlboro. In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial donations to the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

I first met Jack at my interview for AT&T in 1984 and worked with him for many years. Jack was instrumental in shaping many of the careers of the kids who just joined AT&T out of college. He was our manager, a mentor, but most of all a great friend. Jack took a genuine interest in helping us navigate the corporate world and guided us to make the most of every opportunity that was available for growing our careers. I will always remember Jack for his easy going approach to work, his laugh, and his friendship; he was truly one of the �good guys� and tops in my book. My deepest sympathies to Nancy and the family.

The first time I met Jack was on my Lucent interview. After the introduction,we eventually started talking about where our families were from. I discovered that Jack knew who my father and other friends/family members were. They all grew up in Vailsburg around the same time. We took turns throwing out names and it was amazing how many people we had in common. I am grateful for the opportunity Jack provided me. He looked out for all of us. He was the boss, but a good friend first. I am deeply saddened on hearing he passed. My condolences to Nancy and the Delaney family.

Jack was first a supervisor, but ultimately a friend. I doubt he ever met anyone who could think of him as other than a friend. No memory I have of Jack lacks that warm smile - unless, of course, it was replaced by his laugh. My condolences to Nancy and the rest of the family.
