Philip Michael O'Donnell passed away October 20, 2011 at home surrounded by his 9 surviving children. Born in Bayonne NJ on June 16, 1918, a graduate of Bayonne High School; He worked for 44 years for the Bendix Corporation interrupted by military service in two wars. Phil served with distinction in the Pacific Theater during WWII on the USS Piedmont participating in the occupation of Japan receiving a commendation from Admiral William Halsey for his work at the Yokosuka Naval Base. After the war Phil's talent with electronic equipment led him to be invited to the residence of Dorothy Joan O'Leary to fix a radio. He Married Dorothy on April 22, 1950 and they went on to have 10 children, one of whom died in infancy. Phil was recalled to service with the US Navy in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. Phil earned an amateur radio operator's license in 1938 (W2LNB) and was a life-long 'ham' radio operator. Phil also contributed countless hours of volunteer work at St. Jerome's Parish as the boiler operator and handy man. After Phil's retirement in 1983 he took up walking miles at a time and annoying his son in law by working for him. He experienced a bad patch in his life with his beloved wife's illness with Alzheimer's. In His last decade following his wife's death he stopped lifelong alcohol abuse on his own, unassisted; enjoyed relatively good health and enjoyed breaking into the mall before it opened to get a walk in, seeing his grandchildren, and torturing his dutiful daughters by wearing obscenely torn clothing. Phil will be greeted when he goes to his reward (obtained only through the intercession of his beloved Dorothy) by his wife and his daughter Christine; his Father John, and Mother Mame; his sisters Helen O'Donnell, Catherine Mahoney, Margaret O'Donnell SJ, Betty O'Donnell SJ, Marie Menville; and his best friend Al Menville. Phil, his wise counsel and great stories will be missed by his children Philip (Vicki), Michael (Barbara), John (Kathy), Judi, Daniel (Trisha), David (Louise), Peter (Chrissy), Maggie (Peter) Simon and Paul and his grandchildren Kristen O'Donnell-Connelly, Chris O'Donnell, Sarah O'Donnell, Kelly O'Donnell, Kiel O'Donnell, Ryan O'Donnell, Daniel O'Donnell, Jay O'Donnell, Jake Simon, Kate O'Donnell and Erin Simon; his nieces and nephews; and by his special friends Urb and Don. Visitation will be Sunday October 23rd, 1 to 5 PM at the Woolley Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch, NJ.
