U.S.Army Veteran Edward George Schneider passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2013 with his wife, Ann, by his side after several years in a courageous battle with cancer. Ed is admired for his determination to continue to live what he referred to as 'a wonderful life'. Never complaining during his years of treatment and rarely missing a day of work, Ed especially looked forward to Sunday dinners with the family and his weekly golf outings with friends. Ed chose to live a little each day rather than die a little each day. A remarkable 50 year career in the retail food business, Ed started as a store clerk with Grand Union. His professional resume includes owner/operator of Shore's in Oakhurst as well as executive positions with Grand Union, Foodarama Shop-Rite, and A&P. The consummate grocer with a true passion for his work, Ed lasted only three weeks in retirement when realizing he missed 'the business'. He leaves his most current position as Store Director for Saker Shop-Rite in East Brunswick. In earlier years, Ed's most challenging role was as Lincroft Little League coach for his son's and daughter's teams, and as a selfless volunteer for his church. A New Jersey native, Ed was born in Newark, grew up in Iselin, and eventually settled in Lincroft to raise a family before moving to Holmdel. Ed graduated from Woodbridge High School and attended the NY State College of Agriculture at Cornell University in Syracuse, NY. Ed served several years in the U.S. Army stationed in Giessen, Germany, and was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal. Loved and admired by those who knew him, Ed is pre-deceased by his parents, Edgar and Mary, and survived by his wife, Ann (nee Curry), his children – son Dan and his wife Sheryl, son Bill and his wife Jennifer, daughter Mary and her husband David Hintz, a sister Kathleen and her husband Tony, a brother Ken and his wife Susan, three grandchildren Sam, Rachel and Jack, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9PM at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday 10:00AM at St. George's-by-the-River Episcopal Church, 7 Lincoln Avenue, Rumson, NJ. Entombment will then follow at the Holmdel Cemetery, Holmdel, NJ. In lieu of sending flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the charity of your own choice; or to The Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714; or to the Riverview Medical Center Foundation, 1 Riverview Plaza, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

Today November 6, 2020 I have learned of the passing of my mentor in my Shop Rite days. I was only 16 when I started working for Shop Rite of Passaic. I remember meeting Mr. Schneider on my second day. I remember him asking me "what were my plans with Shop Rite? You know you can build a career here". I didn't give it much thought then and there but a few weeks after it started to ponder on me. I was hired to push carts and within a few months of my constant conversations with Mr. Schneider I was brought inside. He had me go onto the cash register, and that I can say taught me how to be professional in dealing with people. I can almost even say that position helped me grow into an adult because I was dealing with all types of people. I graduated high school working there then went to the Marine Corps and also became a career firefighter. My first job, my first leader absolutely had an impact on my life. As we all tend to do we lose touch for life reasons. I always thought of Mr. Schneider and wanted to really thank him. I'd like his family to know that he was a blessing to my life. May be continue to rest in peace.
