Rene M. Campis, 68 of Holmdel, passed away suddenly Monday afternoon at his home.

Rene was born and raised in Woodside, Queens. He worked his way from modest beginnings, finishing college, obtaining his CPA, and starting his career at Price Waterhouse. He then spent the majority of his career as an Executive at Merrill Lynch during which he achieved an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. His work-ethic and achievements earned him respect within the financial industry with his career culminating as an Executive Vice President at Delaware Investments.

After college he married the love of his life Francine and the two would settle in Holmdel to raise their family. In over 40 years of marriage, their greatest joy together was seeing their three children grow up to be happy and successful.

Rene had a true love of sport fishing. He was happiest on the water. Whether he was trolling for striper or on an overnight tuna trip to the Hudson Canyon, this time spent with friends and family was one of his true passions. When he couldn’t be on the water, Rene found immense enjoyment in cycling. On any given day, you could find Rene tackling long distance trails or riding around his neighborhood.

Rene expressed his love through his meticulous care of the things he cherished in his life which included his boat, his home, but most importantly his family. Simply put, he poured himself into every aspect of his life.

Rene is predeceased by his brothers Richard and Robert Campis.

Rene is survived by his loving wife Francine Campis of Holmdel; his children Daniel Campis of Syracuse, Christopher Campis and his wife Abby of Hellertown, PA, and Jaclyn Campis of Holmdel; and his brothers Edward Campis, and Joseph Campis.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 19^th from 6:00-8:00 PM and Friday, August 20^th from 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Rd, Holmdel. A mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, August 21^st at 10:30 AM at The Church of St. Catharine, 108 Middletown Road, Holmdel. An entombment will follow at Holmdel Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Rene’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

On behalf of the entire Shields family, I would like to express our sincere condolences to the Campis family on Rene's passing. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have known Rene and Francine as a result of the close friendship our respective sons developed early on during their time together in the Holmdel school system. In those days I knew Rene as a smiling face and a friendly disposition; my son remembers him as a loving father and great family man. May God bless Rene and now also grant comfort to all in his extended family at this exceedingly sad time. With our heartfelt sympathy.

You truly are one of the best my friend. I could always count on you to go fishing, even if it was only you and me! At night, chunking for tuna, your saying would be "and then there were two". We would be the only two up, waiting for that bite! He was a real true friend, who would do anything for me. I'm going to remember him, sitting on that engine hatch waiting for the next rod to go off ! I know when Rascal leaves the dock, you'll be on board. I love you man,! Till we meet again . Words cannot express my sorrow for your loss. Rene was loved dearly by Russ and I. He was always there to help a friend! Rascal very rarely left the slip without Rene. Literally Russell's right hand man on a canyon trip! We do not meet many real friends in a lifetime and Rene was one. Forever in Our Hearts. Fair winds and calming seas Captain Rene.

My memories of Rene are shared laughter, inside family jokes , support of my career path and love of family. He knew me most of my life and his passing leaves a hole in my heart. My life was better for having him as my cousin.
