Dr. Edward J. McNamara left a message on April 6, 2023:
Dot Spencer was an educational giant - the solid backbone of the faculty at Keyport High School during her professional teaching career. Keyport High School in the 70's and 80's was much larger then than it is now- 900+ students. The faculty changed from year to year but Dot was part of a wonderful core of veteran teachers who rode the waves year after year. She was the go to person for the novice members of the home economics department. It was for that reason that her young teachers stayed on and succeeded. It started out as the usual foods and sewing courses and expanded dramatically into additional semester courses including parenting, psychology, international foods, parenting, child care, and even a in school pre-K program that was way ahead of its time. Dot was behind those changes and innovations which were later recognized by the state and incorporated into curricula used throughout New Jersey. At the same time, Dot ran a very successful cooperative education program. She was always finding room for "just one more student." She provided the classroom instruction and the supervision of the students on the jobs which she helped students to secure and keep. More than once she was on the phone with an employer running interference for one of her students. (Some of the kids she worked with (took in) were a little rough around the edges.) For many of them, it was their first employment experience. She had to use her considerable charm and great smile to get through the problems and personalities. I am sure that there are many adults who fondly now remember Mrs. Spencer and the life lessons she taught and lived. She was a great teacher whose legacy lives on. I was Vice Principal at the high school during a 70's and remember Dot well . I am grateful for the fine work she did and the kindnesses she showed me. I am sure that feeling is shared by many others- teachers and students. Dr. Edward J. McNamara
