Treasure A. Herman, 89, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, leaving behind a family whose lives were deeply enriched by her love, faith, and generous spirit.
Treasure was born and raised in Staten Island, the daughter of Edith and Raymond Humphreys. She grew up surrounded by the love of a close-knit family that included her parents and two sisters. After attending the Academy of St. Dorothy, she earnedher nursing degree from Fifth Avenue Hospital School of Nursing. In 1958, she married her high school sweetheart, beginning a devoted partnership and family life that would remain at the heart of everything she did. They first made their home in Staten Island, moved to Middletown in 1961, and settled in Colts Neck in 1966, where they lovingly raised their six children. A gifted and compassionate nurse, Treasure worked at several hospitals, including Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, before putting her career on hold to devote herself to her family. She returned to nursing in 1988 at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital, where she completed a career grounded in caring for others.
Treasure cherished traveling with her husband and family, especially the annual two-week pilgrimage to Nags Head on the Outer Banks of North Carolina that brought everyone together for more than 30 years. She loved spending time on the boat with her husband—although not when he was fishing—and visiting international destinations with him during retirement. At home, she delighted in making every holiday special, particularly Christmas, which included two weeks of decorating each year. She stayed active by walking every day, rain or shine, and enjoyed theater productions both on and off Broadway. Her contagious laughter filled the room whenever a slapstick favorite such as The Pink Panther or The In-Laws was on television. A devout Catholic, Treasure shared her faith through the parish council, the Martha Mary Guild, and a weekly Bible study group at St. Mary’s in Colts Neck. She also volunteered at Mercy Center in Asbury Park, supportingmothers in need. Above all, Treasure gave herself freely and lovingly to her family, her friends, and anyone who needed kindness or care.
“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teachings of kindness are in her tongue”
Proverbs 31:26
Treasure’s life was a beautiful example of love expressed through service. Whether caring for family and friends or offering kindness to someone she had just met, she made people feel seen and supported. She seemed to know exactly when to offer advice and guidance, when to step in and help, and when simply to listen. Her humility shone through in her willingness to laugh at herself, while her quiet confidence reflected a life lived with purpose and grace. Nothing brought her greater joy than her family, and she was endlessly proud of the people they became. Her love will remain with them always.
