Vietnam Veteran – 101st Airborne Division Anthony James DeJohn, 66, of Manalapan, formerly of Hazlet, passed away on Sunday, April 20th, 2014 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. he lived in Hazlet for 34 years before moving to Manalapan a year ago. Mr. DeJohn was an Executive Director for Government Solutions with A.T.& T Florham Park, N.J., retiring in 2013. He was a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, serving in the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles). He was the recipient of the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. He attended the New York Institute of Technology and the Sloan School of Business at MIT. He was a former Hazlet Little League Coach, and was active in the Hazlet Youth Athletic League. He loved his hobby of woodworking – and was an ardent woodworker. Anthony was a loving and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Surviving is his wife Susan (nee Chiarelli), a son Anthony and his wife Gina DeJohn of Colts Neck, a daughter Jennifer and her husband Robert Johnson of Hazlet, 4 grandchildren Giovanna and Anthony DeJohn, Robert and Jonathan Johnson. Visitation will be at the Holmdel Funeral Home 26 – South Holmdel Road, Holmdel on Wednesday, April 23rd from 1 to 4 PM and from 6 to 10 PM. A Funeral Mass will be offered 10:00AM Thursday at St. Benedict R.C. Church, 165 – Bethany Road, Holmdel. Entombment will then follow at the Holmdel Cemetery. Susan & Family, We were so saddened to learn of Tony's untimely passing. We have such fond memories of him back in the early days of Hazlet. He always had a smile on his face and loved to joke around with the kids. You have our heart felt sympathy for your profound loss. May Our Lady keep you in her care and give you strength.

Susan, I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband.

I had the great privilege of working for Tony supporting the Federal Aviation Administration. He was tireless in delivering the best service to all his customers. The most valuable lesson Tony taught us all is that family was the most important thing in life. We will all miss him but carry forth his memory in this vital lesson. He lived life dedicated to his family.

We are truly sorry to hear of the loss of such a wonderful man. Having to say goodbye can be so cruel, yet sometimes knowing that our loved ones are no longer suffering can help bring peace. Your family is forever in our prayers and hearts.

The world has lost a truly great soul. My deepest sympathies to the family he loved so dearly, cherished above all else, and talked about every day.

The "Wise Old Owl" was a wonderful teacher. He treated all of us like family. He bragged about and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He will be missed!

I had the honor and pleasure to work with Tony for many years at AT&T Solutions. He was a great team guy, wonderful mentor and always had time for people. My prayers go to his family and he will be truly missed.

Sorry to hear about the bad news. I went through 5 years ago; These are tough times that everyone goes through but with family support will make you strong, keep smiling.

His value system and committment to excellence were second to none. He was always there to help, no matter the hour or the issue. He was a friend and mentor to many. He will be greatly missed.

Tony was a colleague at AT&T Solutions when I worked there during the late nineties; he was a wonderful character, known and loved by all for his unique sense of humor and demeanor. He was also a great mentor to the younger members of the team. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Dear Susan: I was lucky to have spent time with Anthony as a childhood classmate at Holy Family. Even then he was so kind and gentle. He was an encouraging person. We used to take walks and talk about what we wanted to do when we were grownup. He was light years ahead of his age in intelligence and maturity. I really liked him so much as a dependable friend. All of us did. And when he went to war, it just seems fitting that he would earn all sorts of medals and purple hearts too. He was just a patriot, and an all around great guy. Tony and I were in the same class at Holy Family School in Canarsie. We graduated from Sr. Matthew's 8th grade class in June 1961-- all 65 of us! How well I recall Tony's kindness, intelligence and sense of humor. He was a fun loving gentleman who never had a bad word to say about or to anyone. Some of us have remained close through all these years and when together reminiscing about our 'glory days', Tony's name always came up as 'one of the good guys.'
