Esther Hughes, age 88, of Oceanport, passed away peacefully, June 10th, at Jersey Shore Center in Eatontown, NJ.
Esther was born in Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated to the USA when she was 25 years old. She was a medical technician at Monmouth Medical Center for over 20 years and was a proud communicant of St. Michael’s R.C. Church, West End, Long Branch.
Esther loved life! She was a champion bowler and bowled in a league until she was in her 80s. She enjoyed going to Atlantic City and playing bingo. She played cards every Tuesday with her pals in Oceanport. More than anything, Esther loved to travel! She attended Broadway shows, went on cruises, traveled to Florida, Puerto Rico, and her beloved Homeland of Scotland. She was always up for an adventure and loved to go shopping, to the movies or just spend time with her extended family. Esther loved Takanassee Beach club and spent every summer soaking up the sun and jumping in the waves with her beach friends and family.
Esther had many hobbies as well. She would knit lap blankets for people in wheelchairs and she would make scarves for friends and family. She delivered Meals on Wheels in her building and she loved living in her little apartment. She enjoyed doing word searches, watching golf and making her famous burnt London broil with tatties (aka potatoes).
Esther was one of eleven children and is predeceased by her parents John Frances Hughes and Ellen Quinn along with her U.S. siblings Kathleen Chesney and Rosaleen De Bonis. She is survived by her sisters – Geraldine and James Erndl, Millstone, NJ and Eileen Jacobsen, Norfolk, Virginia and by many nieces, nephews and treasured friends that she considered family.
Esther will be remembered for her quick wit, great sense of humor, and contagious smile. She was everyone’s favorite “Aunt Esther”. In lieu of flowers, please reach out to someone elderly with a good deed and put a smile on their face! Always remember to enjoy each day like Esther did!
