Francis E. 'Calkie' Calcaterra, West Long Branch was born May 25, 1922 in Mt. Holly, New Jersey. A lifelong resident of West Long Branch he was a graduate of Pennington Prep School. His later education at Brooklyn PolyTech was interrupted by a two year stint in the Air Force where he served as an airplane and engine mechanic. He inspected, tested and did maintenance on B-25, B-24 and B-29 planes, insuring they were in flying condition prior to each flight. He was honorable discharged on May 13, 1946 and continued his education at Brooklyn PolyTech graduating with a degree in Aeronautics/Engineering. He worked as an engineer at Fort Monmouth and married Minnie F. Scialfa on September 9, 1956. He was an avid chef, boater, woodworker and golfer. He was a member of Old Orchard, Fort Monmouth and Jumping Brook golf clubs. He enjoyed cooking for his family and crabbing in the evenings on the Shrewsbury River. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Edna Calcaterra. He is survived by his wife, Minnie, three daughters and sons-in-law, Maryann and Ricky Loring, West Long Branch, Nancy and John Salerno, Oceanport and Lisa and Michael Levy, Ocean, as well as three grandchildren, Jaclyn, Angela and Jacob, two sisters-in-law, Fran West and Pat Scialfa, many loving nieces and nephews, his cousin Charles Goldy and his caretaker, Cora Lee. Visitation will be Sunday, September 19th, 4-8 PM at Woolley Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. The funeral service will be Monday, September 20th at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
