So sorry to hear this very sad news. Eilene and I were second cousins (our moms were first cousins). We both grew up on Webster Street in Irvington, NJ. As a kid, I was very impressed with her academic achievements and that she attended the Sorbonne in Paris. Her mom, Rosa Barr, was my fifth- grade teacher and a very special person. The fruit didn't fall far from the tree. Her dad, Julie Barr, was the attorney for the Irvington Board of Ed and also a wonderful man. Z'l

Randomly today I did a search for my HS Honors English teacher & saw she passed away 2 weeks ago. Dr. Eileen Skolnik had a huge impact on my career to also become a HS English teacher, & now a professor. At first, she couldn’t stand me & I must say my 17 y/o obnoxious self enjoyed “challenging” her during class. She hated when my friend called me out of class from the office (weekly). She was assigned to be my home tutor when I broke my leg, but she’d come & mostly talk with my mom, another English teacher. I wrote to her, apologizing & thanking her. She returned a letter & called me “a thorn in her side.” She took us on trips to Broadway monthly & to the NYSE. She loved teaching & was a very passionate educator, something I strive to do daily. I get random messages from former students telling me the difference I made in their lives, one last week from a gang member I had in my class in Atlanta telling me that I’m the reason he is alive. Eileen was amazing! May she rest in peace.

It was my honor and pleasure to serve as Illene's rabbi for so many years. I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with her and sharing our Shabbatot and holidays with her. I suppose my favorite memory of her was when my wife and I hosted a 20's dinner at our house and she came in a full flapper outfit and really got into the part. She had a wonderful laugh and her intelligence and insight were inspirational. I will very much miss her. I know that her memory will be a blessing to those who loved her. May he soul be bound up on the bonds of life.
