Jim Cousins and I had Quite a history. We both fished the Rip every fall during the Big fish years from 1983-89. In those years we were fiercely competative, neither of us ever missing a night from late september right through to December. Many nights we, along with 'Big Bill' Capraun were the only ones there in absolutely miserable conditions. We barely spoke to each other and when we did it was not pleasant. We hid fish from each other, took separate trails in and out never leaving so much as a drag mark in the sand. We fished very different styles side by side and experienced some incredible nights over that time span. We did this in an era that had no cell phones or braided line or Van Staal reels. It was 706's, ande pink 20 and fiberglass rods. Years later we became good friends sharing memories of those great nights both realizing we shared a bond and we were part of something very special that will never be duplicated. Hats off to a good man and a great fisherman. He will be missed. Charlie Fornabio

Jimmy will be missed. I still have the poles he made me when we lifeguarded together. I had not seen him since I moved to NC several years ago, but think of him often from HS, work and fishing. He will be in my prayers.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Mr. Cousins used to come into the bank where I work about once per week. I looked forward to his visits -- he was always kind, always laughed, an always wished God's blessings. At the same time, he was fiercely independent. To me, a perfect embodiment of the yin and yang. Soft and firm. One of the stories he told me very recently was that more than anything, given his physical state, was fishing ... and what he loved most was teaching the kids at Sandy Hook how to fish, how to make a lure, how to tie a line. He had tears in his eyes when he told me stories about those days. He had lots of other stories -- about his dad, his son, his mom, his fishing buddies, his special chair at the bait shop. He talked fondly about 'the cove' and always asked me to joke with one of the guys in my office when he was going to show up. Mr. Cousins -- if you are reading this -- I hope you caught a Real Big Fish. I will miss you.
