Rose McCabe, 93, of Hazlet, died peacefully on Sunday, September 4, 2022.
She was born in New York City in April of 1929 to the late Lucy and Angelo Perna. Rose grew up in Little Italy with her family, and graduated from high school in Jersey City. Later, she was thrilled to purchase her own home in Hazlet where she resided for over 60 years. After retirement she enjoyed living next door to her sister in a condo on the intracoastal in Florida.
Rose had an incredible work ethic and learned the value of money from an early age as she lived through the Great Depression. She worked as a bookkeeper for several companies, including her son’s company, and prepared personal taxes for her family and friends. She enjoyed helping people become successful with their small businesses and was very loyal to her employers. She was a woman of integrity, a cherished friend, an accomplished professional and an avid learner. She enthusiastically shared her wisdom and stories with other eager learners as an accounting and computer teacher. She also volunteered for many years as treasurer for her homeowners association in Florida.
Rose was very social and was loved by everyone. She enjoyed bowling, her garden, the beach, yelling “Bingo!,” watching a good program and a nice cup of tea.
Rose most of all loved spending time with her large Italian family. She was a cherished mother, Nannie, sister, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, and aunt. She loved telling stories, playing games and enjoying meals together. She had an incredible gift of hospitality, greeting her guests by holding their face and giving their cheeks a kiss. She was always happy to see you and hated when you had to leave. She loved to cook for everyone during the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. She was known for her famous meatballs and “Italian” gravy, a family recipe passed down to her and that her children and grandchildren still prepare today.
Rose is predeceased by her parents, her son Michael McCabe, and her siblings Anthony “Tony” Perna, Angelina Nadolski, and Geraldine “Gerri” Sylvester.
Surviving are her children James and his wife Dianne McCabe, Patrick McCabe, and Michele and her husband Tom Trio, her sister Stephanie Slevin, beloved grandchildren Jennifer, James “Little”, Laurren, Michael Paul, Denise, Joseph, and Andrew, and beautiful great-grandchildren Aidan, Logan, Mila Rose, Noah, Grace, Madeleine, Alexander, and Amelia. Her legacy, life lessons and stories are carried in the hearts of those who love her.
A Memorial Gathering will take place on Saturday, September 17 from 2pm – 5pm at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. A Remembrance Service will be offered from 4pm – 4:30pm during the memorial gathering.
