Peter was born and raised in West Orange and attended St. Benedict’s Prep. He graduated from Niagara University and received his Law Degree from Toledo University. Peter practiced law in Monmouth County over 50 years, where he served as the President of the Bar Association as well as the President of the Monmouth Bar Foundation for many years. He served as the Prosecutor in both Red Bank and Tinton Falls as well as the Public Defender for Asbury Park and Tinton Falls.

He was a member of the West Long Branch Borough Council, where he served as the Chairman of the Police Committee. Peter was a member of Borough Chemical and Truck Company #1, West Long Branch Fire Department. He was a parishioner of St. Jerome’s RC Church.

His priority in life was his family. He cherished time with his grandchildren and loved bragging about each of them to anyone who would listen. He enjoyed making friends, once you became a friend of Peter, you were his friend for life. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching sports especially with his grandchildren.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, Isabelle and John Kenny; two brothers, John and Philip Kenny.

Surviving is his beautiful and loving wife of 52 years, Carole Uncher Kenny; their children, Patrick and his wife Kate Kenny, Wayne, Pa. and Karen and Michael Dettlinger, Brielle; his grandchildren, Molly, Annie, William, Lilah Grace and Jack.

Due to Covid19 restrictions, Peter’s family will have a private funeral mass at St. Jerome’s RC Church, West Long Branch. I first met Pete in the fall of 1959 when we were freshmen at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, and we remained good buddies through our graduation in 1963. I was completely delighted to bump into Pete many years later on the golf course here in Spring Lake where I would often see him on Saturday mornings. Pete was a great guy and always a lot of fun. I will never forget him. My sincerest condolences to his wife and family.

I was so saddened to hear about Mr. Kenny being sick as I would contact him from time to time to say hello and keep in touch as I worked very closely with him for 21 years as his assistant. Mr. Kenny was a real humanitarian, helped so many people . He was very kind and smart and very witty. He always had a sense of humor. He was very good to me. He will be missed but he’s with the Angels now.

I am so sorry to hear about Peter’s passing. Although first cousins, we have not been in touch in about 40 years. I came across this photo of the last time we were together. It is Peter, his dad John, and my Dad Charlie Kenny at Aunt Eleanor’s house in Spring Lake. I have fond memories of everyone on a beautiful summer day. I knew Pete from the time I first started practicing law in Monmouth County. I think the late Jim Flanagan introduced us. Later he appeared before me quite a bit when I worked on the WC court in Freehold. I have a particular memory of a day shortly after September 11, 2001 he stopped into my office to tell me how concerned he was about his son who had been near ground zero and saw someone who'd jumped from the tower fall on the sidewalk and die. During the 20 or so minutes we spoke I could hear how deeply he cared about his family and what an important place they had in his life Pete was not only a first rate lawyer, he was fine human being. We were very saddened to learn of Peter's passing. He served the Fairway Mews community very well for many years. His advice and counsel was always appreciated. To Mrs. Kenny and your family, from the Boyle family, our heartfelt condolences on your loss of Peter. I had the pleasure of seeing him at the Monmouth Bar Assoc. office whenever he came to court (I am the Admin. Asst.). He always welcomed me with a “Hello kiddo” and indeed loved to show off his wonderful growing family. A true gentleman will be missed and you are all in my comfort blessings.

Peter's older brother Philip, my husband, died 11/01/2019. In the year prior, Peter called often and checked on his brother. It was always a blessing to Philip. Near the end, his calls to me were encouraging and full of love. I would relay the messages to Philip and he so appreciated them. He loved his brother. I know the Lord will minister to you all now. I am truly saddened by hearing the news of Peter's passing. Peter and I were "adversaries " in Worker's Compensation court. I use the word adversary very lightly. Peter was always a gentleman, well prepared, and always had a smile on his face. The best part about working with Peter is that we never discussed any cases but rather he would talk about his children and grandchildren. There was never a time that he didn't share pictures.
