Arleen Natelson

September 2, 1929 - February 12, 2021

Arleen Natelson, 91 of Little Silver died at her home on Friday, February 12^th. Mrs. Natelson, eldest daughter of Reuben and Eva Grant, was born and raised in Newark. She met her future husband Bernard ‘Bud’ Natelson while both families were summering at the Shore. They married in June 1950 and, after a European honeymoon, moved to Fair Haven. A short time later they settled in Little Silver.

Love of children fueled her fire, both in her own house and outside in the local community. She was a founding Board Member of the Monmouth Day Care Center, and energetically volunteered time and talent to the Children’s Psychiatric Center in Eatontown, the National Council of Jewish Women, and early efforts to establish Planned Parenthood in Red Bank. Though never employed in the local family-owned clothing store on Broad St. in Red Bank, Arleen was an invaluable consultant solving the thorniest business challenges that her husband faced. Arleen was a long-time member of Congregation B’nai Israel, Rumson.

She was an accomplished bridge player and, as a member of Navesink Country Club, enjoyed tennis, golf, and winter paddle tennis. She was an avid fan of the NY Giants, Yale Bulldogs, and any team or entertainment activity involving her children.

In recent years, although she was legally blind, she relied on audible books to participate in two different book clubs. She flew to her grandson’s wedding in Chicago, despite being confined to a wheelchair. She rarely complained and never accepted being left out of any holiday, milestone, or family gathering.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three married sons; Rabbi Steven and wife Sherri Natelson, Jerusalem, Israel, David and wife Melanie Natelson, Tinton Falls and Richard and wife Joan Natelson, Silver Spring, MD. Arleen is also survived by her sister, Judy Goldman, Maplewood, NJ, eight grandchildren, Graig and wife Mary Kathleen, Eric and wife Kelly, Aliza and husband Sruly, Bracha Leah and husband Alexander, Sarah and husband Sam, Devorah, Shoshana and Dov Ber, and 9 great grandchildren Yahuda, Oriel, Teferet, Ayelet, Yacov, Ruchama, Michaela, Mackenzie, and Patrick.

A private funeral service occurs Monday February 15^th 11 am at Congregation B’nai Israel, Rumson. Interment will follow at B’nai Israel Cemetery, Tinton Falls.

We were so moved by the beautiful service for Arleen. Your words and emotions portrayed the way we remember her, totally selfless and unconditionally devoted to her family as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her love of life and participation in all things despite the physical obstacles were truly amazing. She was a “Woman for All Seasons.”

Hello Bud, David, Steve and Rich, I’m so very saddened to learn of Arleen’s passing. Like you, I and so many others will remember Arleen as the wonderful person she was, beautiful inside and out, kind, generous, sincere and loving. Also so very courageous fighting through her painful final years, a battle she never could win and yet she lived every day as best she could, without complaint and with positive outlook, dignity and grace. And how very fortunate she was for the ever-present support and love of Bud, her adoring husband of 70+ years, along with her boys and her extended family. Amazing Aunt Arleen! Always up on and interested in all the "action"... who was doing what/getting married/having babies, etc. And such a trooper!! Even when things were tough, she managed to attend parties, celebrations and family get togethers - and always with a hug and a smile. Just a few years ago, when she learned I began playing bridge, she took the time and effort to send me an old bridge book of hers and offered to help with any bridge questions that might arise. She loved her family - and especially loved to discuss her grandchildren's goings on...she was so proud of them all. She was a beautiful, special and incredibly strong person and will be missed by everyone who knew her. Sending prayers and love to the whole family. xoxo, Amy

A friend who was always fun to be with, share ideas about plays we saw and dinners where we forgot to bring the wine and had a great time.

I was employed at Natelson's Clothing Store in Red Bank back in the 70's and remember the Natelson family well. Though, I never got to know Mrs. Natelson except when she came into the store, I remember her as a very kind and personable lady. I wish to send my sincerest condolences to Mr. Bud Natelson and the Natelson Family. May she eternally Rest In Peace.
