Albert J. Herman, 86, a longtime resident of Colts Neck, died on Saturday, May 20th. He was born and raised on Staten Island. He graduated from St. Peter’s High School and then went on to graduate top of his class at the New York Maritime Academy.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Following his return from the Navy, he and his wife Treasure settled in Middletown and then moved to Colts Neck in 1966. Albert worked briefly as an Engineer at Worthington Pumps, before accepting a position in the Executive Training Sales Program at Mobil Oil. He remained with Mobil until his retirement as the Executive Vice President of Mobil Global Shipping. During his career, he traveled extensively throughout the world, when possible accompanied by his wife. He had an office and maintained a flat in London, which was his favorite city. Albert was ahead of his time championing his team by coaching them on building their career long before it was something managers did.
Albert’s philosophy in life was everything is possible. Hard work and figuring it out was his approach to any new task from taking trees down to fall just the right way, to building a boat house from found materials, to renovating the homes of his children. All tasks started with “Let the adventure begin.”
His passion was boats and fishing. He owned four boats, docking the last two in Atlantic Highlands. He named the first three boats after each of his daughters and the fourth was named “My Girls.” At the docks in Atlantic Highlands, he was affectionately known as the Mayor. He enjoyed building his own fishing rods to catch whatever was biting. His favorites were Stripers, Tuna and Marlin. For more than 30 years, he and the family would take their annual pilgrimage for a two week vacation to Nags Head on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
His family has no doubt that upon meeting Saint Peter in heaven his first question will be “Where is the dock?” and “How is the fishing?”.
Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Treasure Herman and six children; Peter and Kathy Herman of Atlantic Highlands, Ray and Rose Herman, of Manasquan, Alexis Herman of Little Silver, Steven and Kerry Herman of Draper, UT, Mary and Todd Traina of Manasquan and Virginia Goad of Belford; 14 grandchildren, Timothy and his fiancé Gianna, Matthew, Grace, Katie and Rocky, Jessica and Joe, Mary and Alex, Korbin, Ryan and his fiancé Chelsea, Justin, Michael, Peter, Nicholas, Lucy and Thomas; and 3 great grandchildren, Anna, Vivienne and Emily.
