Alice A. Nicas, 91, passed away Sunday November 8th at Monmouth Medical Center. Mrs. Nicas was born in Astoria Queens and moved to Long Branch in 1950. Mrs. Nicas was a graduate of Hunter High School and Hunter College for Women. Mrs. Nicas earned her Master’s Degree in Chemistry from NYU; working in cancer research at Sloan Kettering. She was an Accountant for Friendly’s Ice Cream, Shrewsbury. Mrs. Nicas was an active volunteer in her Long Branch Community as well as the Greek Community. She was a member of Philoptochos Ladies Society for over 50 years, where she was a past president; she was a 9 year member of National Philoptochos Board, New York City for the Welfare & Cardiac Children’s Fund. She was the 1st co-chair of the Greek Festival at St. George Creek Orthodox Church, author of the 1st Greek cookbook for the church and a member of Daughters of Penelope. Mrs. Nicas was awarded the highest award for Philoptochos Service from the Metropolitan of New Jersey. She was an elected member of the Long Branch Board of Education for 25 years, where she served as president and chaired the 1996 Long Branch Alumni Hall of Fame. She was past president and treasurer for Long Branch Woman’s club and a former member of Guggenheim Library Association, Monmouth College. Mrs. Nicas was past president of AAUW and an active member of their gourmet cooking club. For over 50 years, she served as a member of the Monmouth County Eastern Star. She was a member of the Friends of Long Branch Public Library and a member of St. George’s Breakfast Club. Mrs. Nicas was a former chairperson and active member of the Crystal Ball Committee, Monmouth Medical Center. Mrs. Nicas is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Allen M. Nicas in 2005. Surviving is her daughter Iphigenia “Effie†Nicas and Michael Peter Nicas. Visitation Wednesday, November 11th 4:00 -8:00 pm at Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. Services will be Thursday, November 12th at 10:00 am at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 West Park Avenue, Ocean. Burial will follow at St. George Greek Orthodox Cemetery, West Bangs Avenue, Neptune.
