Doris Fitch Maggio, of Holmdel, died peacefully at home on November 20, 2023. She was born June 3, 1925 in Carrolltown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Anne Bondy and George Fitch. She graduated as valedictorian from Carrolltown High School and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1948. During her collegiate career, she played trombone in the marching band and developed a love for the Spanish language and culture; this was reinforced by a year-long stay in Puerto Rico after graduation.
In the 1950’s, she lived in New York City’s Upper East Side while working for the Bell Telephone Company. She married Patrick “Pat” Maggio of Bayonne, New Jersey in 1957. Together they raised a family of six children in Bloomfield and later Holmdel, New Jersey. Starting with the inaugural 1970 class at St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel, she taught Spanish for 23 years, headed the foreign language department and served as chaperone on numerous overseas student trips. She earned a master’s degree from Montclair State College in 1973. During her long teaching tenure, she inspired countless high schoolers with her impassioned instruction.
Doris cherished her marriage and cared deeply for her family. She was a devoted parishioner of Church of St. Catharine in Holmdel for the past fifty-five years. She loved big band music, especially the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s “In the Mood”. In her retirement, she enjoyed her ever-growing family. She journeyed to several foreign countries with her long-time friend, the late Pat Chapman of Tinton Falls.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Patrick Maggio, siblings Frank (Frieda), Edwin (Kathryn), Emmit (Rosabel), Thomas and Mary Feltner (Elmer), sisters in law Anne, Irene, Josephine LoRe (Jimmy) and brothers in law Salvatore (Anne), Vincent (Eleanor) and Dominick (Rosejean). She is survived by her six children, Marina Levandoski (Marty), Mark (Anna-Marie), Chris, Eric (Jennifer), Kurt (Mary) and Neil (Robin), as well as fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
