Emily M. Kret, 93, died at her home in Holmdel surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, July 2, 2022.
She was born in Newark New Jersey, Emily Tortorello, the youngest of five children where she graduated from East Side High School. She and her husband Tony were married in 1950 and lived in the Ironbound section of Newark until they moved to Nutley in 1959 where they raised their family, eventually retiring to Holmdel in 1999.
After high school Emily worked at “the phone company” for a number of years before leaving to start a family. She and Tony traveled the country for several years early in their marriage while Tony played semi-pro baseball in the Phillies organization. After her family was grown, she worked in accounts payable for Mountainside Hospital in Montclair.
She enjoyed bowling in a Women’s league for many years, playing pool and going to the Meadowlands Race Track with Tony. They traveled cross country together in 1980. Other trips included family vacations at the Jersey Shore, Canada and a cruise to the countries along the Mediterranean. She loved to cook and often prepared her legendary “Grandma’s Gravy” for a Sunday macaroni and meatball dinner with the family. Her favorite pastime was to invite friends and family to her home, make them one of her signature meals and spend quality time in conversation She enjoyed watching old movies and was a big fan of Frank Sinatra. She lived a full and happy life and was always “Young at Heart.”
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Anthony Kret in 2004 and her grandson, Kevin Kret in 2020, her mother Minnie, her step-father Simmons, and her siblings Mildred, Louise, Alice and Benny.
Surviving are her children, Denice and Frank Yavorski, Freehold, Shelley and Dennis De Lorenzo, Farmingdale, and Michael and Joan Kret, Middletown; her grandchildren, Lauren, Matthew and Chelsea, Corryn and Eric, Chris and Danielle, Cassie and Joe, Dylan, Megan and Jennifer; and her great grandchildren, Emi, Mason, Aaron, Gwen, Ryan, Julia and Luke.
Visitation, Wednesday, July 6th, 4 to 8 pm at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday, July 7th, 10:15 am at Saint Leo the Great RC Church, Lincroft. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Mausoleum, North Arlington.
