Gertrude (Trudy) Durner Sherman, 85, of Matawan, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 29th at home, surrounded by family.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Trudy graduated from St. Savior High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from College of St. Elizabeth.  Trudy and her beloved husband Bob moved to Matawan in 1967, where they raised their family. For many years, Trudy was a sales associate at Matawan Card and Gift Shop.  She also worked for Talbots, Shrewsbury, for 19 years, until the age of 82.  Trudy had a true fashion sense and was easily recognized in her plaid, tweed, and sparkle.  She enjoyed shopping, mystery novels, Italian food, Broadway music, shows on CBS and watching the late-night news.

Most of all, Trudy loved taking care of her family.  Frequent family gatherings and events were the highlight of her days. Summer vacations on Chadwick Beach and Long Beach Island with the family were treasured. Trudy enjoyed the change of seasons and the holidays, especially Christmas, which she always made memorable with her festive decor,  thoughtful gifts, and holiday spirit. Trudy’s boundless energy, determination and feisty attitude was contagious. Her legacy, life lessons and stories live on in the hearts of those who love her.

Trudy is predeceased by her husband, Robert, in 1999.  She is survived by her children,  Dorann Sherman of Matawan, Robert and Gina (Barreca) Sherman of Tinton Falls, Jeanine and Todd Matthiessen of Shamong, Nicole and Matt Keating of Howell; her beloved eight grandchildren:  Matthew, Jack, Grace, Nicholas, Kate, Robert, Christian and Kylie;  as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, October 7th at 11:00 am at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel.  Entombment to follow in Holmdel Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to the Hemophilia Association of New Jersey,  www.hanj.org.

Such a beautiful tribute, the genuine smile on her face in the pictures speaks volumes to how she felt about her family and lived her life. I always admired the beach pictures in Rob’s hallway and how happy everyone looked, so much love. I didn’t have a whole lot of contact with Trudy but when I was in her company, she was so easy to talk to, like we’d always known each other.
