Howard M. Townsend, 60, of Long Branch, passed away on November 14, 2016. Howard was born and raised in Long Branch. He was a graduate of Long Branch High School, attended Peddie Preparatory School in Hightstown, New Jersey and Bethany College in West Virginia. In 1980 he graduated from the Police Academy and became a member of the Long Branch Police Department and proudly wore badge #210 until his retirement. Howard was a die-hard New York Giants fan, an absolute avid golfer, and a loving father and husband passed away as a result of a heart attack. He was an exempt member of the Branchport Hose Company of the Long Branch Fire Department where he served as the Captain. Howard was past Club Champion at Old Orchard Country Club; the 2012 Club Champion at Bella Vista Country Club; and the 2014 Club Champion and 2015 Senior Club Champion at Jumping Brook Country Club. Howard was a dear friend and mentor to many. When he walked into a room he would put smiles on everyoneâ€™s faces because they knew â€œUncle Howieâ€ was here. Dedicating many years of service to the city of Long Branch retiring at the rank of Corporal, Howie was a natural leader and a hard worker. Howard was predeceased by his father Howard F. Townsend. Surviving is his mother Gloria Townsend of Melbourne, Florida, his wife Lucille Townsend of sixteen years, his sister Susan Townsend Dziuba of Long Branch, his brother-in-law Stanley Dziuba of Long Branch, his four children, Megan Townsend of Point Pleasant, Laura Townsend of Point Pleasant, U.S Navy Lieutenant Stephanie Wexler of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, William Wexler of Point Pleasant, his father-in-law William Geis of Point Pleasant and his niece Ashley Dziuba of Long Branch. Howard lived his life by giving his time to his family and others and he will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Visitation Sunday November 20th, 2:00 â€“ 6:00 pm at the Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. Mass of Christian Burial Monday November 21st, 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Church, 408 Prospect Street, Long Branch. Burial St. Gertrudes Cemetery, Woodbridge. I knew Howie when we were young...I last saw him when we were ten years old . I lived on Brighton Ave at the time. My mother had died and we moved away and we never spoke again. My fondest memories of Howie were playing 'army' or football in his yard. We would watch an episode of 'Combat' on tv after school and then try and reinact the episode out in his yard. He always wanted to be Sgt Saunders because he had a plastic 'tommy gun.' He had one of those kids plastic helmet and canteen sets as well and I can still see him in my mind's eye with gun in hand offering me a sip of water from his canteen in his best Sgt Saunders imitation.His house was on an 'island' surrounded by streets, had a brick pillar at each corner and made for a wonderful place to play in the imagination of a ten year old. We would spend hours building 'forts' and playing army. Great times they were. I am deeply saddened to hear of Howie's passing, but glad to see he lived such a wonderful life. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Lucy and Townsend Family: I am so sorry to hear of such an unexpected loss of your father, brother, husband, uncle. May God provide you with comfort, hope and peace during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathy to the Townsend family. He was one of the nicest people I know, always left us with a smile on our faces with something he would say. He will be greatly missed!

He was my lifelong friend. There are so many amazing moments I am thinking of today as I, along with so many, mourn this shocking loss. We fought the imaginary Blackfeet Indians together, we played war with all the rest of the Hollywood ave troops. He had GI Joe and I had Barbie and Midge. We shared our first kiss behind my garage (I think we were about 9!). And we shared a special bond all of our days. He was my friend, my brother. He was like family. Howie had a heart the size of the super moon. To Susie and Gloria and Lucy I send hugs and to Howie I pray for Godspeed to a beautiful fairway shot.
