Veteran – U.S.Army – World War II James A. Weldon, 89, of Holmdel, NJ, died on Tuesday Feb. 2 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, NJ. A native of Jersey City, he was a graduate of St. Peter's College and served as a medic during World War II in Northern France and Central Europe, landing at Normandy and taking part in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he completed his studies at SUNY Downstate Medical College, and worked as a doctor for Exxon Corporation in New York. Dr. Weldon established a family practice in Hazlet in 1958, and he served the families of the rapidly growing community for more than 30 years. With his wife, Mary, and their nine children, he moved to Holmdel in 1961, to a home he affectionately named, 'Bedlam on the Bluff,' where he resided until his death. In addition to his work as a physician, Dr. Weldon was active in the community, serving as one of the first trustees of St. Benedict's Parish when it was founded in 1959, a member of the chorus, and a great Irish tenor. He was a founding trustee of Bayshore Community Hospital, and served as president of the medical staff, 1977-1978. An avid golfer known for his elegant swing, Dr. Weldon enjoyed listening to classical music, especially Mozart, and reading books on American history. After his retirement, he attended Brookdale Community College and enjoyed many courses in history, literature and art. Dr. Weldon was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and John, and two sisters, Rita and Anne. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Mary nee Van Fleet; three sons; James Weldon and his wife, Kerry; John T. Weldon, William Raymond Weldon and his wife, Sharon; and six daughters, Mary Ann Yannuzzi and her husband, Raymond, Kathleen Weldon, Patricia Mehlem, Maureen Hellman and her husband, Timothy, Eileen Oates, and Anne B. Weldon; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel on Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral mass 10 am, Saturday, at St. Benedict's R.C. Church, Holmdel. Internment at St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Marlboro, NJ.
