James V. Jones, 92, of Holmdel, died on Monday, June 26.
James was born in 1931 to the late Louise and James Jones in Manhattan, where he was also raised. He began working from an early age at Schaefer Beer, then General Electric, and finally Metro-North Railroad, where he was a conductor for over 37 years before retiring. He and his wife Mary Ann lived in the Bronx, then Astoria, Flushing, Middletown, and finally Holmdel where they resided since 1991.
James was a member of the Madison Square Boy’s Club, where he was big in sports. He played basketball, softball, and football, and went on to coach various sports at St. Andrew’s in Queens. He served as a Crossing Guard for Holmdel Indian School for years and was known to the community for his wonderful sense of humor as well as his kindness. James was a handyman around the house and an all around man’s man. His proudest achievement was his family.
He is predeceased by his parents, and his brother Thomas Jones.
Surviving is his loving wife of 71 years, Mary Ann Jones, their children Geraldine and her husband William Herlihy of Holmdel, Gerard and his wife Maria Jones of Lindenhurst, and Robert and his wife Jennifer Jones of Hazlet, six grandchildren Christine, Jimmy, Gerard, Steven, Dean, and Leanna, four beloved great-grandchildren Gianna, Joseph, Lucia, and Sophia, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 29 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm, with eulogies at 8 pm at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. A Funeral Home Service will be offered on Friday, June 30 at 10 am at Holmdel Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Holmdel Cemetery.
