Jane Yao Tang, 102, of Fort Lee, passed away early Wednesday morning surrounded by her family.

Jane was born and raised in China, she graduated from college there and in the 1940’s she and her family came to America. They started here originally in Pittsburg but ultimately moved to Manhattan, where Jane would go on to attend Columbia University. Following her graduation, she took a job at the United Nations International School in NYC where she would remain until her retirement.

Jane loved to play Mahjong with her friends, entertaining guests in her home and she and her husband were very charitable giving as much as they could to the arts and education programs. Jane always said the key to life is eating whatever you wanted.

Jane is survived by her Nephew William Chuang and his wife Jinny; and her great-nieces and nephews Ann Woon and her husband Colon and their daughter Ava; Brooke, Christopher, Donald, Erica and Frida.

Jane was the first person to greet me when I arrived as the Principal at UNIS on East 51st in 1968. She showed me her kindergarten classroom and took me to lunch. She also entertained my mother during her visit to New York. She was always willing to to take me to the airport in her large Cadillac. She was a special kindergarten teacher. I am so sorry and sad to learn abour the passing of Mrs. Yao who was my kindergarden teacher at the United Nations School during the year of 1963, Mrs. Yao was such a sweet, intelligent and caring person / teacher. Mrs. Yao will be missed by all of her students. Sincerely, Andrew Mandel

My sincere condolences. Mrs. Yao was my kindergarten teacher in the mid-1960s. She was a great teacher and a warm, loving person. A true saint.

My deepest condolences. Mrs Yao was my teacher 1963/64. I remember her kindness and joyfulness as a teacher. I was terrified of coming to school but in a short time, she made it such a safe and happy space. What greater kindness is there? She is one of the teachers I truly remember. lots of love to you.

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. I worked at UNIS for 15 years with Jane and remember how elegant (she had absolutely gorgeous legs) and how kind and friendly she was. She was kind enough to lend me her Kindergarten room for Summer School sessions. She had it set up using Feng Shui, and her room really did offer an especially peaceful environment for the children to be in. I know that teachers who did Kindergarten Intake Interviews also loved using her room. Feng shui and her loving spirit made it special. I am very glad to hear she attained 103 years and was surrounded by loving family. You have my condolences on this heavy loss.

Dear family of Jane, I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend Jane and regret to learn it so late. We taught together at UNIS for 3 decades and I was fortunate to know her and her husband Tom personally. She was generous, attentive and fun to be with. May she rest in eternal peace!
