John D. Maggs, of Point Pleasant Borough, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2024, after a courageous battle with melanoma.
John was raised in Deal and Holmdel and lived in several local towns before settling in Point Pleasant Borough. John was born in Neptune, New Jersey on June 15, 1965, to Marguerite Himebaugh Maggs and Robert L. Maggs, M.D. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy and Villanova University, where he was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity.
John had a distinguished twenty-five (25) year career in law enforcement. It began at the Department of Law and Public Safety, New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement as a State Investigator serving in the Casino Intelligence Unit in Atlantic City. He then joined the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office as a County Detective, where he was entrusted with investigating highly confidential and complex investigations. John became a member of a Federal Bureau of Investigations task force that conducted the “Operation Big Rig” investigations.
John retired from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office as a Detective Sergeant, having spent the majority of his career working in the Special Investigation Section, Special Prosecutor Bureau, Financial Crimes/Special Prosecution Unit. John was a proud and loyal member, as well as a Past President, of the Monmouth County Detectives PBA local 256.
John was predeceased by both his parents and his brother, Robert L. Maggs, Jr. He is survived by his children, John Jr. “Jack,” and Katherine and her fiancé, Trevor Rawlik; his siblings Marguerite Maggs-Fitzgerald and brother-in-law, Michael, Barbara Maggs, James Maggs and sister-in-law, Heidi, Marianne Maggs-Chagares and brother-in-law, Stephen, his sister-in-law, Julie Maggs and his maternal aunt, Anne Rita Himebaugh.
Those closest to John will always remember how much he enjoyed starting his day drinking coffee while reading the paper at the Manasquan Inlet, or how much he loved playing Rummy 500 with his sisters and playing Wordle with his family.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel, New Jersey. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July 26, 2024, at St. Mary’s Church, 1 Phalanx Road, Colts Neck, New Jersey, followed by interment at the Holmdel Cemetery, Holmdel, New Jersey.
