John Joseph Gorman III, passed away peacefully March 9th after a long, arduous battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was with his wife, Carol, and his loving family at the time of his death. John was born at South Amboy Hospital, South Amboy, NJ on February 20, 1935 and was raised in Matawan, NJ by his loving parents, John Joseph and Ethel M. (Brewer) Gorman, both deceased. John attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School and Matawan High School, Matawan, NJ, where he played on the 1952 State Champion Football Team. After high school, John joined the US Marine Corps, and was a proud Marine for the rest of his life. John spent fourteen months in Foreign Service as a Marine and was a disabled veteran. He was nominated for the Navy-Marine Corps Medal for bravery in a non-combat situation. He was a life member of the 3rd Marine Division Association and the Philip K. Dorn Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Port Monmouth, VFW Post 2179. He was voted Marine of the Year in 1994 by the Dorn Detachment. John won several “First Place†state awards for publishing the detachments newsletter as well as winning acclaim by finishing in 3rd place at the League’s International Convention in Rochester, MN in 2009. A graduate of Brookdale Community College and the McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science, he was a licensed funeral director and embalmer. John worked for various area funeral homes including Woolley Funeral Home, Long Branch and Bedle Funeral Home, Matawan-Keyport. NJ John owned and operated several businesses in Monmouth County. He was politically active in the Democratic Party, serving as Municipal Chairman in both Matawan and Union Beach as well as the Financial Secretary for the Monmouth County Democratic Party. He served as President of the St. Joseph’s Parish Council and as a coach for their St. Joseph’s CYO baseball and basketball teams. He played an active role in National Amateur Sports, serving as Media Chairman for the USA Amateur Boxing Association, promoting such notable boxers as Mark Breland, Virgil Hill and Evander Holyfield. John was married three times and loved all deeply. His first wife, Laura, deceased, gave him two wonderful sons, John Gorman and his wife, Tamra, Austin, TX and Jerome (Jerry) Gorman and his wife Mary Jo, Farmingdale; His loving and devoted second wife, Phyllis McAlaster and her five children, Robert Francisco, Clarkdale, AZ, Susan Knoeppel and her husband Gary, West Long Branch, Sharon Francisco, Matawan, John Francisco and his wife Sheryl, Union Beach and Nicholas Francisco and his wife Carin, West Long Branch; as well as Carol his loving and devoted third wife and her three children, Charles Fornaro, PA, Jennifer Fornaro, NJ and Mark Fornaro at home. And his adopted son Wilman Orrego, Freehold, NJ. as well as 20 loving grandchildren. A Mass celebrating his life will be held Tuesday, March 17th at St. Joseph’s RC church, Keyport at 11:00 am.
