John J. Murphy, 99, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10.
John was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and had a very happy childhood there with his parents, his six siblings and his large, extended Irish Catholic family. At age 18, he bravely enlisted in the US Navy and served stateside in WWII. John retired from NJ Transit where he first started working in the yards, then he became a conductor, and served as the Treasurer for his local Railroad Union. He was a meticulous record keeper and kept back-ups to his back-ups.
He loved to spend time with his family in Lake Hopatcong, a place near and dear to his heart. The time spent with family at the Lake made lasting impressions and memories for the entire Murphy family. John’s other passions included photography, computers, reading, storytelling, finishing the NY Times daily crossword puzzles, flying small aircraft, traveling, and repairing things. He enjoyed tinkering and always seemed to have the right tool at hand. Shaped by growing up during the Depression, he valued saving and reusing everything. He was extremely generous to all those he loved and genuinely enjoyed helping his family.
John met his wife, Nancy, on the train during her daily commute to New York City. She was the love of his life, keeping him young and always ready for their next adventure. Together, they traveled to Ireland several times, enjoyed spending winters in Florida, and shared a special fondness for Cape Cod. Their eternal adventure has just begun.
John was predeceased by his parents, Nellie and Patrick; his wife, Nancy; his brother, Martin; and his sisters, Mary, Jo, Eileen, and Pat.
John is survived by his sister, Kathleen (Renee) Kojola, and his many loving nieces and nephews.
John will be privately laid to rest at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran’s Cemetery, Wrightstown.
