Joseph Elia, 93, of Staten Island passed away Monday surrounded by his family.
Joseph was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He would serve his country honorably in the Korean war being stationed in the Pacific Theater working with the Hydrogen Bomb testing as well as in Europe for the Berlin Air lift. Upon returning from the war, he would marry the love of his life, Agnes, and the two would start their lives in Brooklyn before moving to Staten Island. Joseph worked many jobs in his life, a jack of all trades, Joseph would do anything to provide for his family. He would ultimately spend most of his career working for the Longshoreman’s Union.
Joseph loved trips to Atlantic City to play blackjack with his wife, was a remarkable storyteller, and loved to cook dinner for his family. Joseph also enjoyed following and playing in the stock market where he would find success.
Joseph is predeceased by his loving wife Agnes Elia; his daughter Denise Ioviero; his son-in-law Nunzio; his parents Pasquale and Mae Elia; and his siblings Pat, Frank, Christie and Rosie;
Joseph is survived by his daughter Lisa Bisking; his son-in-law Neil Ioviero; his grandchildren Denise Story and her husband Robert, Neil Ioviero and his wife Lety, Randi Dietrich and her husband Henry, Jamie Ioviero and his wife Lauren, Anthony Bisking and his wife Brandy, Christen Darstek and her husband Josh and Joseph Bisking and his wife Heather; and 19 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 16th from 1:00-4:00 PM at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Rd, Holmdel NJ 07733. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, August 17th at 11:00 AM at St. Gabriel’s Historic Church, 549 County Road 520, Marlboro. Joseph will then be privately cremated.
