Laurence P. Ferree, Jr., 97, of Elberon, passed away Sunday, November 23rd.
Born in Philadelphia, Larry was raised during the depression and attended 9 different schools as the family moved frequently to find work in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey.
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1947-1951. And was aboard the USS Salem CA-139 after its commissioning in 1949 and for an extra year due to the Korean War.
After his service in the Navy, went to night school at Drexel and then studied journalism at Temple. While in college, also a bookkeeper at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia when C. Everett Koop was there. He worked for Philadelphia Inquirer while in college as sportswriter. Philadelphia Athletics moved to Kansas City when he was at paper. Larry also like to remind us about the 1956 NBA championship won by the Philadelphia Warriors over the Fort Wayne Pistons.
He worked mostly in evenings for United Press service after college. While there on July 28,1956, answered call from irate UP executive demanding aircraft be hired to fly over sinking SS Andrea Doria ocean liner near Nantucket. A plane was hired from a small Pennsylvania airport. Larry worked for a few Pennsylvania newspapers before going to New Jersey to work for the Morristown Record, and later, The Herald-News from 1967-1985. Part of time was spent in remote bureau that covered Morris County.
Larry loved spending the holidays with his neighbors. He enjoyed hiking in the woods and led many excursions for the Appalachian Mountain Club, walking on the beach, reading and watching movies from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. He proudly worked in Barry Goldwater’s 1964 campaign.
