LILLIE D. MYLCHREEST CHERRY, 92, of Hazlet, died Saturday, Sept. 10 at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, where she was a former director of volunteers. Born in Gladstone, Australia, 'Lill' grew up in Brisbane, Australia. She was predeceased by her husband, J. Carlton Cherry, a former mayor of Hazlet, who died in 1988. Mrs. Cherry was a war bride who met Mr. Cherry in Brisbane, where he was an administrative aide to Gen. Douglas MacArthur in World War II. Mrs. Cherry was also predeceased by four sisters: Edna Coulson, Vera Hackwood, Doris Mitchell, and Elsie Petfield, all of Brisbane, Australia. A After coming to this country in 1946 with other war brides, Mrs. Cherry was a legal secretary before assuming the roles of mother, homemaker, and community volunteer. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Hazlet where she was a former president of its Woman's Society of Christian Service. She was a member of the Keyport Literary Club, the Crescent Club, the Strawberry Patchwork Quilters, and the World War II War Brides Association. She was a former member of the Hazlet Fire Co. No. 1 Women's Auxiliary. She was a founding member of the Hazlet Auxiliary to Bayshore Community Hospital whose members worked tirelessly to raise funds toward the construction and establishment of the community hospital in northern Monmouth County. She became volunteer director of volunteers in 1972 when the hospital opened and served in that capacity for 10 years. She was also an officer of the hospital's affiliated board of auxiliaries. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Barbara Cherry of Annandale, Va.; her daughter, Nancy Cherry of Hazlet; three grandsons, Mark Cherry of Reston, Va., Michael Cherry and Robert Cherry, both of Fairfax, Va., and several nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. Interment will be private at Green Grove Cemetery, Keyport and a Memorial Service will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church, Hazlet, at a future date. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
