Rev. M. Joseph Mokrzycki, Jr. Passed away peacefully at the Rectory of St. Elizabeth RC Church, Avon on Monday January 25, 2010. Father Mokrzycki attended Our Lady of Victories Elementary School, Sayreville, NJ and graduated in 1953. He was a 1957 graduate of St. Peter's High School, New Brunswick, NJ. Father received his A.A. in 1959 from St. Charles College Seminary, Catonsville, MD. He received his A.B. in 1961 St. Mary's Philosophy Seminary, Baltimore, MD. Father Mokrzycki was awarded his S.T.B from St. Mary's Theology Seminary, Roland Park, MD in 1965. Father Mokrzycki was ordained a Priest by Bishop George W. Ahr on May 22, 1965 at Saint Mary's Cathedral, Trenton. From 1965 -1966 he was the Assistant Pastor at St. Hedwig's Church, Trenton; in 1966 he became the Assistant Pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Long Branch until 1968. Father returned to Seton Hall University in 1968 and was awarded his M.A. in American Studies in 1969. He was the Chaplin at Monmouth College from 1969-1977 and was the Founder of Bethlehem, The Catholic Newman Center. In 1972 Father was awarded a second M.A. degree from N.Y.U. in history. From 1974- 1978 he was the Diocesan Director of Catholic Campus Ministry. Father was the Representative for the Province of Newark, National Campus Ministry Committee Member of the NJ Catholic Historial Records Commission, from 1978-1993. Father was the Chaplain to the Long Branch Knights of Columbus Council 335 for several terms from 1980 to 1990. He served on the Juvenile Conference in Long Branch from 1981 to 1994. He was the Moderator of Monmouth-Ocean Region PTO, 1982 to 1986. Father Mokrzycki was appointed the 9th Pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Long Branch on September 16, 1977, where he served until 2007, when he became the Pastor of St. Elizabeth Church, Avon. Father was predeceased by his Mother Mary Jennie Rohal Mokrzycki on Feb. 15, 1985; his Father, Milton Joseph Mokrzycki, Sr., November 23, 1986; a brother Christian Mokrzycki, a Christian Brother on July 23, 1970. Surviving is his sister, Mary B. Mokrzycki Holzworth, RN, Turnersville, NJ; two nephew's William J. Holzworth, Turnersville, NJ, Joseph C. Holzworth, Williamstown, NJ; his niece, Mary E. Holzworth Nardone, Williamstown, NJ, Marita A Holzworth Butzbach. Loxahatchee, Fl. Father Mokrzycki will be received at St. Elizabeth's Church, Lincoln Avenue, Avon, on Friday, January 29th at 3:00 PM, where he will lie in state until 8:00 PM. A vigil will be offered at 8:00 PM. The mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday January 30th, 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Victories RC Church, 42 Main Street, Sayreville, NJ. Interment will follow on the family plot at New Calvary Cemetery, Parlin, N.J. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday January 30th, 4:00 PM at Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church, Second Avenue, Long Branch. You may light a candle of condolence on the opposite page.

His homilies at Star of the Sea inspired me, guided me, and made me feel like I was in "the right place" every Sunday, ultimately leading to my decision to begin the RCIA process. Milton and I were classmates at Our Lady of Victories, 4th-8th grade 1953. Then again at St.Peter's High School, class '57. He was always kind, caring and gentle in spirit. I remember father Joe as one of my counselors in the late 1980's. I also remember attending his 50th birthday at The Knights of Columbus in Long Branch, NJ. In his spare time, he liked wrestling and he also played drums. Not just I, but many of us thought that he wasn't going to age. His homilies are what kept me going back to the Church at the time. I always knew I was a Christian, but Father Joe is the reason I became Catholic. His homilies at Star of the Sea inspired me, guided me, and made me feel like I was in "the right place" every Sunday, ultimately leading to my decision to begin the RCIA process. I am honored to have had Father Joe minister my RCIA ceremony, and I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from his practical, genuine, down-to-earth, entertaining messages (with a joke or a tune always thrown in for good measure) about what he always held most dear - God, love, and relationships.
