Mary L. Schlachter, 87 of Brick died on Tuesday, January 19th.
She was born in New Jersey to the late Margaret and Herbert Shields and grew up in the Veilsburg section of Newark. After high school, Mary decided to go to nursing school and become a Registered Nurse. She attended St. Michael’s School of Nursing in Newark, New Jersey.
After nursing school, she met the love of her life Edward and together they started a family. Mary had three beautiful children who were always her greatest joy.
Mary relished her life’s work as a nurse and always loved helping people. When she was not working, she volunteered a lot of her time helping the United Farm Workers of America. She was a devout Catholic all her life.
She is predeceased by her husband Edward Schlachter, her daughter Mary, her brother Robert Shields, and her cousin Maureen.
Surviving is her son Edward Schlachter of Brick, and her daughter Peggy and her husband Sean Winther of Belmar, and her two loving grandchildren, Caroline and Juliet. She is also survived by her sister, Mother Marija Shields.
Visitation Friday, January 22 from 4pm to 6pm at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 23 at 11am at St. Mary’s Church, 1 Phalanx Road, Colts Neck. Disposition will be private.
