Mary (Matina) Mavrookas, 90, of Colts Neck passed away on Monday, September 6th. Born in Tripoli, Greece she came to the U.S. in 1958, and settled in Perth Amboy before settling in Colts Neck 47 years ago.
She was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Perth Amboy for 63 years. She volunteered her time, baking cookies and desserts for the church festival as a member of the Philoptochos. Matina was honored as Mother of the Year in 2016. She was the matriarch to her 6 children, 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Matina was predeceased by her husband George Mavrookas.
She is survived by her sons Peter, Dino and Louie Mavrookas, daughters Stella Kolb, Kateina Ganiaris, and Fay Gianaris, and by her 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ on Friday, September 10th from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered Saturday, September 11th at 11:00 A.M. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 41-47 Wisteria Street, Perth Amboy, N.J. Interment will then follow at the Holmdel Cemetery, Holmdel.

My deepest sympathies to everyone in the Mavrookas family as my Aunt, Nouna, Koumbara was the epitome of selflessness, kindness, loving & nurturing. My childhood memories were filled with joy because every holiday was magical, especially Christmas. You would have thought she was Mrs. Claus herself. Even everyday visits were special. No one else made me loukoumades at the drop of a hat. I felt welcomed & loved all the time. She was always there at every pivotal moment in my life, graduations, Koumbara at my wedding, and Nouna to my son. She was like a second mother to me. I will miss her dearly. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves memories that last forever.
