Maryann Gowen, 63, of Forked River, died on Thursday, May 23.

Maryann was born in Hoboken NJ to the late Rose and Leonard A. DeFelice. She was raised in Lincroft, where she lived for 45 years and also raised her family. Maryann attended St Leo the Great School and graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School and Monmouth University. After college, she worked at GE in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, where she met her husband. She then received her insurance license and eventually took over the family business, LAD Insurance Agency, from her father. At end of her career she was a training specialist for Insurance Offices of America (IOA), taking great joy in sharing her knowledge.

Maryann was a volunteer at St. Leo the Great and was involved with PTA and Pre-Cana and selflessly gave of her time to others. She enjoyed cooking, especially Italian foods and hosting Thanksgiving for many years. Her solace was relaxing at the beach, and she found great joy exploring NYC with family and friends, watching her sons’ many athletic events, and eating ice cream. Most of all, Maryann loved spending time with her family and friends and experiencing new adventures.

Surviving is her beloved husband, best friend, and soul mate William “Billy” Gowen, her two sons (her “pride & joy”) Brian Gowen and his wife Catherine of NY NY, and Drew Gowen and his wife Paige of Freehold NJ, her sister Linda DelCore and her husband Richard of Bluffton SC, and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 29 from 4pm – 8pm at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road, Holmdel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, May 30 at 10:15am at St. Leo the Great Parish, 50 Hurleys Lane, Lincroft.

There truly are no words to say how very much you will be missed…I will cherish our fun times we had you were a genuine friend who always gave good advice and cared for people. Your strength taking care of your mom in her hardest days showed your devotion to her. Maryann was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed. Just this weekend I was thinking of a picture I took that I would have normally texted Maryann. Maryann was so wise and had unique insight into people. I immensely enjoyed our conversations together, some humorous, some serious, but always insightful. We spoke of our families; I kept her up to date on mine and she kept me up to date on hers. Maryann dearly loved her family. Maryann always had a funny story to tell and knew how to tell a story; we always joked that she could write a sitcom! She knew how to truly listen and also read between the lines and share wise advice. I learned a lot from her. While we worked together professionally, it was more than that. We truly were genuine friends. Maryann cared about people, and it showed in everything she did. I greatly respected the positive attitude she carried for the past few years when facing the biggest challenge of her life. She loved life and fought for it. To her entire family, I send my sincere condolences.

I grew up with Maryann in Lincroft and we both attended St. Leo’s Grammar School and Red Bank Catholic High School. She was such a bright and beautiful person and got along with everyone. She was so down to earth and proud of her Italian heritage and always very close to her patents, siblings and cousins. She always valued her family relationships. My sincere condolences go out to her family and close friends.

Sometimes in life you cross paths with someone who leaves an imprint on your heart. Maryann was that person. We met as coworkers, and even though we were separated by a great distance we were as close as sisters. I'm a better person for having known her and will forever hold her close in my heart.

My condolences to the Gowen Family. MaryAnn was certainly a dedicated mom. I have very fond memories of working with her at St. Leo's. She had a vibrant personality and a great sense of humor. She will be missed.

It broke my heart to lose my cousin Maryann. I remember playing house with her when we visited. She always played the mother! She was also my insurance agent for many years. I love Maryann and respect her for the positive attitude she kept while battling her fight with cancer. And I respect her for the love and care she gave her mom, my cousin Sissy, in her later years. She left us way too soon, and I'll miss her very much.

Maryann was a wonderful person mom wife and will be missed! Gone too soon! Prayers to the family.

Billy and family, my deepest condolences. Maryann was one of the best people I have ever known. I will miss our talks, the advice she would give, The recipes we used to share ,the planning our holiday meals using some of Ina Gartens favorite recipes, the pictures shared of any beautiful hydrangea we would see.
